Chapter 1: The Ever-Evolving World of Science

Introduction

The Grade 7 Curiosity book opens by welcoming us back after Grade 6 and reminding us that it is "not just a textbook with facts — it is an invitation to question, to perform experiments, and to explore." Even the page numbers are playful: they follow the flight of a butterfly and a paper plane. The book points out that something as simple as a paper plane inspired real scientific study of flight — from early inventors studying bird wings to modern engineers designing aircraft.

Science is a process — a way of thinking that welcomes curiosity, asks questions, and is open to the unknown.

Key Concepts

Asking deeper questions

In Grade 7 we try to ask deeper questions:

  • How do things work?
  • Why do events happen the way they do?
  • What can we learn from the patterns we see in nature?
  • To answer them we must step out of the book (and sometimes the classroom) and experience the world through activities and experiments.

Science is about discovery and responsibility

The chapter says science is not only about discovery but also about responsibility. Human activities are linked to what happens in nature and to our society, and science can help solve environmental challenges and build a more sustainable world.

All fields of science are connected

Physics, chemistry, biology and earth sciences may appear as separate chapters, but they are interconnected — an idea in one area often sparks questions and discoveries in another.

A quick tour of the year

The chapter previews the journey ahead:

  • Why are some fruits sour? What happens when we wash a haldi stain on a uniform? (acids and bases)
  • Playing with batteries, lamps and wires to see which materials make a lamp glow (electricity)
  • Sorting materials into metals and non-metals
  • Changes around us — some can be reversed, some cannot (batteries run out, ice melts, fruits ripen, rocks break into pebbles)
  • How heat flows — from an ice cube in a glass to a melting glacier, and how water evaporates and falls as rain
  • How our bodies change as we grow, and life processes in animals and plants
  • How we measure time and how fast things happen — early humans used shadows to tell time
  • Light and shadows, eclipses, day and night, and the movements of the Earth, Moon and Sun
  • Activities in the Chapter

    Activity 1.1: Question the Answer

Instead of answering questions, you invent questions for given answers. The book reminds us: "To be a wise person, you must be a whys person."

Example: for the answer "Just make it half!" the question could be "How do we share a cake equally?", "My essay is too long", or "I can't fit this in the envelope".

Now try: "Just add some milk." · "Because the cat's teeth were crooked." · "Don't panic, I have my towel." · "42" (but avoid obvious questions like "What is 32 + 10?").

There are no wrong questions — the aim is creativity and curiosity.

    Key Terms

  • Curiosity — the wish to know and explore (जिज्ञासा)
  • Experiment — a test done to find something out (प्रयोग)
  • Observation — carefully noticing what happens (अवलोकन)
  • Pattern — something that repeats in a regular way (प्रतिरूप)
  • Discovery — finding something new (खोज)
  • Sustainable — able to continue without harming nature (संधारणीय)
  • Interconnected — linked with each other (परस्पर जुड़े हुए)
  • Real-life Connections

  • A paper plane you fold in class uses the same ideas engineers use for aircraft.
  • Questions like "why is lemon sour?" come from everyday life and lead to real science.
  • Common Misconceptions

  • "Science is a set of facts to memorise." — The book says science is a process of asking and testing.
  • "Asking questions means I don't know enough." — Good scientists are known for asking amazing questions.
  • "An experiment that confirms my idea ends the enquiry." — It often leads to more questions and more experiments.
  • Keep the Curiosity Alive

  • Write your own creative questions for each answer in Activity 1.1 and compare with friends.
  • As you read each chapter, note one "how", one "why" and one "what if" question.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Science is a process of questioning and exploring, not just a collection of facts.
    • ✓Grade 7 aims at deeper questions: how things work, why events happen, and what patterns in nature teach us.
    • ✓Different fields of science (physics, chemistry, biology, earth science) are interconnected.
    • ✓Science brings responsibility — linking human activity, society and a sustainable world.
    • ✓Asking good questions is as important as finding answers (Activity 1.1 'Question the Answer').

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Start with the page-number butterfly and paper plane; fold paper planes and ask what makes some fly farther.
    • →Run Activity 1.1 in pairs; display the most creative questions on a class 'Question Wall'.
    • →Use the chapter's preview list as a year map — let students vote on the topic they are most curious about.
    • →Model 'wise person = whys person' by answering a student question with another question.
    • →Link each preview item to a real object (lemon, battery, ice cube, clock, torch) placed on the table.
    • →Keep a class curiosity journal where students add one question a week and revisit it later.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student explain why science is called a process?
    2. Can the student give two examples of topics that connect different branches of science?
    3. Does the student frame creative, non-obvious questions for a given answer?
    4. Can the student name three topics they will explore in Grade 7?
