Chapter 5: The Rise of Empires
The Big Questions
"There cannot be a country without people and there is no kingdom without a country." — Kauṭilya in Arthaśhāstra
Introduction
Bhavisha and Dhruv switch on their new time machine, ‘Itihāsa’, and land outside Pāṭaliputra (about the same location as modern-day Patna). They meet Ira, daughter of Kanhadas the ironsmith, and watch soldiers cross a drawbridge over a moat — a bridge that is lifted whenever the city is in danger. Ira shows them the hills and forests that supply timber, herbs and elephants, a cave being carved for monks, and a busy market with silk from China and spices and gems from the south. Her king rules lands so vast that it takes close to two months on horseback to reach the borders. "It is called an Empire," she says proudly.

The fragile nature of empires
Empires can bring unity and prosperity, but they are usually built and held by force. Regions break away when tribute demands grow, when a weak ruler follows a strong one, when territories are too far away, or after droughts and floods.

The national emblem, the motto satyameva jayate and the dharmachakra on our flag all come from this period. Kauṭilya's idea that the ruler must put the people's welfare first is still a test we apply to governments.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓An empire is a collection of kingdoms under a supreme ruler, with tributary kings paying tribute to the emperor.
- ✓Magadha rose thanks to fertile Ganga plains, iron ore, forests, rivers for trade and strong rulers like Ajātaśhatru and the Nandas.
- ✓Chandragupta Maurya (c. 321 BCE), guided by Kauṭilya and his saptānga, built one of India's greatest empires.
- ✓After the Kalinga war, Aśhoka chose peace and spread his message of dharma through edicts in Prakrit and Brahmi.
- ✓Empires bring unity and prosperity but, being built on force, are fragile and eventually break up.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Open with the Itihāsa time-travel story: let students role-play Ira, Bhavisha and Dhruv at the Pāṭaliputra drawbridge.
- →Draw the 'Features of an empire' web on the board and ask groups to find one Mauryan example for each feature.
- →Use a flow chart for Magadha's rise: resources → iron ploughs and weapons → surplus → trade → power.
- →Let students enact the Porus–Alexander meeting ('Like a King') as suggested in the Let's Explore box.
- →Make seven cards for the saptānga and ask students to match each Sanskrit term with its meaning and a modern equivalent.
- →Show the national emblem and the Sarnath lion capital side by side and discuss the motto satyameva jayate.
- →Read the edict on officials aloud and debate whether Aśhoka's five-yearly inspecting officer would stop injustice.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student define an empire and explain how it differs from a kingdom?
- Can they list at least three reasons for the rise of Magadha?
- Can they name and explain four of the seven parts of Kauṭilya's saptānga?
- Can they explain why Aśhoka changed after the Kalinga war and what his edicts tell us?
- Can they give two reasons why empires are fragile?
