Project 1: Plant Nursery (Part 1: Work with Life Forms)
About the Project
In Project 1: Plant Nursery you will set up a small plant nursery in your school and learn how new plants are raised. Plants propagate (reproduce themselves) in different ways — tiny seeds germinate and grow into trees or flowering plants, while some plants grow directly from branches of the mother plant or from tubers (e.g., potatoes).
Plants need air, sunlight, nutrients and water, but they also need a favourable environment — the right humidity and an optimal temperature. That is why more plants grow near streams, ponds, wells and taps: they get the right temperature, humidity and soil moisture. In a nursery, you create these conditions on purpose.
A plant nursery lets us grow plants whenever required, not only in the seasons usually suitable for them.
Nurseries are important for preserving original plant species, creating new varieties, and producing plants on a large scale. Because a nursery is smaller than a farm, it is easier to prevent pests and protect plants from heavy rain or severe heat.
Did you know? Thimmamma Marimanu, a banyan tree in Ananthapuramu district of Andhra Pradesh, is spread over 5 acres — the size of a small village — all from a single seed!
What You Will Learn
By the end of the project you will be able to:
Materials & Tools
Step-by-Step Activities
Activity 1: Visit a nearby plant nursery
Observe how air, sunlight, water, humidity, temperature and nutrition are maintained. Record the date, nursery name, type of nursery (vegetable, fruit, flowering, ornamental), plants grown, tools used and management practices (watering, pest control, nutrients). Ask the experts how they give the right sunlight and shade, keep the right temperature, water and humidity, protect plants from pests and animals, and transport plants. If there is no nursery nearby, invite a farmer or gardener to school.
Activity 2: Planning and laying out the nursery
Activity 3: Preparing land and setting up the shade-net
The shade-net protects young plants from excessive heat and heat stress.
Activity 4: Germinating seeds — the germination test
Not all seeds germinate. The seed germination rate tells you how many seeds are likely to become plants, so you know how many seeds to sow.
Germination % = (Number of seeds germinated ÷ Total seeds tested) × 100
Example: if 85 out of 100 seeds sprout, the germination rate is 85%. Seed-packet labels also mention the germination rate.
Activity 5: Raising plants in the nursery
Seeds and cuttings contain reserve food (carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, nutrients) used during germination. Always sow more seeds than the number of plants you want.
Method 1 – Raised-bed nursery
Method 2 – Plug or seedling trays
Method 3 – Stem cuttings
Types of stem cuttings:
Did you know? Rahibai Soma Popere, the 'Seed Mother of India' and recipient of Padma Shri and Nari Shakti Puraskar, conserved more than 43 indigenous crop varieties in a seed bank at home.
Activity 6: Watching plants grow
Keep a record of each plant: nursery method, quantity of seeds or cuttings, date of planting, date of germination/first leaf, and observations. Apps for plant watering reminders, pest identification and timelapse photos can help. Care for young plants until they are ready for transplantation in the right season and place.
Activity 7: Calculating the cost
List unit cost, quantity and total price for every item — e.g., tomato seed at ₹10 per g × 5 g = ₹50. This helps decide a selling price for your plants.

Career & Community Connections
The book suggests jobs linked to this project: gardener, botanist, forest officer, farmer, agriculture scientist. Nursery owners and horticulturists also use these skills.
Common Mistakes
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Plants need air, sunlight, water and nutrients plus suitable humidity and optimal temperature to grow.
- ✓A nursery site needs at least 2–3 hours of sunlight, no waterlogging and about 150–200 sq ft; a 50% or 75% shade-net protects young plants from heat stress.
- ✓The germination test (100 seeds on marked, moist paper for 3–5 days) gives the germination rate = (germinated ÷ total) × 100, which tells us how many seeds to sow.
- ✓Three propagation methods: raised beds (compost:soil ≈ 40:60, 15–20 cm high), seedling trays with cocopeat, and stem cuttings (45° slant cut, 2–3 nodes, rooting hormone).
- ✓Keeping records and calculating costs helps plan care, transplantation and a fair selling price.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with a nursery visit or invite a local gardener/farmer; give students the book's question list to interview them.
- →Let groups measure and mark the site with lime powder themselves and draw a scaled layout.
- →Run the germination test with 100 seeds per group and compare germination percentages across seed types.
- →Demonstrate the 45° slant cut and node counting on a real rose or tulsi stem before students try.
- →Set up all three sowing methods side by side so students can compare growth.
- →Assign rotating duties (watering, weeding, record keeping) and maintain a class growth register.
- →Use a real tomato seed packet to show germination rate on the label and practise the cost table.
- →Plan a plantation drive or Kaushal Mela sale with the saplings raised.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain why humidity and temperature matter for young plants?
- Can the student calculate germination percentage from test data?
- Can the student prepare a raised bed and a seedling tray following the correct steps?
- Can the student make a correct stem cutting and name examples of softwood, semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings?
- Does the student follow safety rules and keep accurate nursery records?
