Planning for Kaushal Mela

Why Plan a Kaushal Mela?

At the end of the year your school holds a Kaushal Mela to showcase what you made and learnt in your vocational projects — to other students, teachers, family members and invited guests.

Planning helps you decide how to reach your goal. It helps you think about what needs to be done and when, so everything goes smoothly, and it prevents wastage of time and resources.

The book's examples:

  • For a puppet show, decide when and where to hold it so that the maximum number of people can watch.
  • For a tie and dye demonstration, make sure all materials are in one place, in the right quantity.
  • Because the mela needs a lot of coordination, responsibilities must be assigned for each activity, the process for each activity discussed, and a plan made to work together as a team.

Table 7.1 – Planning the Kaushal Mela

    Basic details

  • Date and time
  • Venue
  • Who will attend
  • What you will present
  • Additional support needed – e.g., electricity, tables, chairs, carpet, computer, open space
  • Components of planning

For each component, the table records the details, a date by which it must be completed, and the in-charge/coordinator.

  • Presentation of your work – project documentation, project poster, a project journey video
  • Setting up the stall and decoration
  • Seating arrangements (if needed)
  • Setting up displays – in stalls, or labelling components in the garden
  • Signboards – e.g., toilet, entry
  • Inviting guests – designing the invitation, guest list, how it will be sent
  • Safety precautions
  • Cleanliness and waste management
  • First-aid station – location and what first aid will be available
  • Anchoring – script and anchor(s)
  • Preparing the stage – setting up, decoration, sound equipment
  • Schedule for the entire duration of the mela
  • Information about the mela – layout, information pamphlets
  • Registration of guests – how, when, what details to collect
  • Feedback from guests – questions and how feedback is collected
  • Cleaning up afterwards – returning equipment, removing waste
  • Showcasing the Six Projects

  • Project 1 – Plant Nursery (Part 1: Work with Life Forms): saplings raised from seeds and cuttings, with growth records.
  • Project 2 – School Habitat Garden (Part 1): a guided walk with labelled components of the garden and records of the animals observed.
  • Project 3 – Tie and Dye (Part 2: Work with Machines and Materials): finished fabric items and a live demonstration with all materials ready.
  • Project 4 – AI Assistant (Part 2): a working demo of the assistant that helps a newcomer to the locality — needs a computer and electricity.
  • Project 5 – Storytime with Puppets (Part 3: Work in Human Services): a timed puppet show on a prepared stage with sound equipment.
  • Project 6 – Family Health Handbook (Part 3): handbooks, the first-aid kit, and perhaps running the first-aid station itself.
  • Teamwork Tips

  • Give every component a named in-charge and a deadline.
  • Meet regularly to check progress against the schedule.
  • Keep a backup for key roles like anchoring and sound.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting "support required" items (electricity, tables) until the last day.
  • No one in charge of cleanliness, safety or first aid.
  • Skipping feedback and clean-up — both are part of the plan.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓A Kaushal Mela showcases students' vocational project work to peers, teachers, families and guests
    • ✓Planning helps decide how to reach a goal, what to do and when, and prevents wastage of time and resources
    • ✓Table 7.1 records basic details (date, venue, attendees, presentation, support needed) and 16 planning components
    • ✓Every component needs details, a completion date and an in-charge/coordinator, so responsibilities are clear
    • ✓Products from all six projects — nursery, habitat garden, tie and dye, AI Assistant, puppet show, health handbook — can be displayed or demonstrated

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Project Table 7.1 on the board and fill the basic details together as a class
    • →Divide the 16 components among student teams, each with a named in-charge and deadline
    • →Ask each project group to list the 'additional support' it needs (electricity, tables, open space)
    • →Have the Family Health Handbook group plan and staff the first-aid station
    • →Rehearse anchoring and the stage schedule at least once before the mela
    • →Design a simple feedback form and assign a clean-up team in advance

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student explain two reasons why planning matters, with the book's examples?
    2. Has every component in Table 7.1 been given details, a date and an in-charge?
    3. Did the student's group identify the support it needs to showcase its project?
    4. Were feedback collection and clean-up carried out as planned?
