The Wit that Won Hearts
Background
The story is set in the Vijayanagara Empire during the reign of King Krishnadeva Raya (ruled 1509–29 CE), often called its Golden Era, when art, literature and architecture flourished. The king was a warrior and a gifted poet; his works include the epic Amuktamalyada and the Sanskrit drama Jambavati Parinayam. His court had eight celebrated poets called the Ashtadiggajas, including Allasani Peddana and Tenali Ramakrishna, famous for his quick wit.
What happens
"If I had known this would happen I would have chosen another day."
Message: Wit used kindly can repair relationships; pride can cloud judgement.
A Concrete Example
About the poem
A humorous poem by Reginald Arkell. The speaker describes the next-door neighbour, Mrs. Jones, whose garden is "full of stones".
My next-door neighbour, Mrs. Jones,
has got a garden full of stones:
"Where is this lovely thing?" I cried.
"You're standing on it," she replied.

Wisdom Paves the Way
About the play
A play in two scenes. Characters: the King of Ujjain, four young men — Ram Datt, Shiv Datt, Har Datt and Dev Datt — a Merchant and two Sentries.
Scene I: The Road to Ujjain
The four friends have travelled for ten days looking for work and hope to gain an audience with the King of Ujjain. They notice fresh camel tracks and study them closely. A distressed merchant runs up — his camel has gone astray. The friends ask whether it is lame in one leg, blind in the right eye, has a short tail and a stomach pain. Every detail is correct, but they say they have never seen the camel. The merchant, indignant, calls them thieves and drags them to the King.
Scene II: The King's Court
Each friend explains his deduction:
The King calls the merchant's accusations baseless, and the chastened merchant leaves. Impressed by their ability to "see beyond the obvious", the King makes the four men his advisers.
Message: Careful observation plus logical reasoning is true wisdom; do not accuse others hastily.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Tenali Rama used a planned, humorous strategy about 'yawning while sowing seeds' to make King Krishnadeva Raya see he had wronged Queen Thirumalambal.
- ✓Reginald Arkell's 'A Concrete Example' uses a refrain, AABBCC rhyme, situational irony and a pun in its title to create humour.
- ✓In 'Wisdom Paves the Way', four young men deduce four facts about an unseen camel purely from its tracks and surroundings.
- ✓Conditional sentences use different tense patterns for real, imaginary and impossible-past situations.
- ✓Modal verbs express different functions such as conclusion, obligation, necessity, wish and command.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with the textbook riddles (answers: words, time, the future, a secret) to warm students up to 'wit'.
- →Have students act out the court scene of 'The Wit that Won Hearts', pausing at the courtiers' sarcastic remarks to discuss tone.
- →Read 'A Concrete Example' aloud and hide the last couplet; let students predict the ending before revealing the irony.
- →For 'Wisdom Paves the Way', give groups one camel clue each and ask them to explain the reasoning to the class like Ram, Shiv, Har and Dev Datt.
- →Practise conditionals with the 'If I were…' sentence starters from the book (a tree, a bird, the Head Teacher).
- →Use the 13 staging steps to plan a class performance of the play, assigning director, props and costume roles.
- →Model rising and falling intonation with the textbook question pairs, then let pairs ask about a planned trip.
📋 Assessment Questions
