Unit 1: Foundations of Physical Education and Well-being
Introduction
This unit connects physical activity with personal growth. Through games and relays you will see how ideas from physics (balance, force, motion, gravity, heat transfer) and biology (muscles, bones, breathing, circulation) show up every time you move. The unit also builds motivation, courage and discipline, and teaches you to recognise and report bullying, harassment and mental-health concerns so that everyone feels safe.
Every activity in Khel Yatra follows the same pattern:
Key Ideas
FPE-1 Horse Vault Race – balance and technique
FPE-2 Progressive Mass Drill – major muscles
FPE-3 Baraf Pānī – standing up to bullying
The game has four roles:
FPE-4 Chār Tālī – society's role against harassment
The lesson: a watchful, active society protects victims of harassment.
FPE-5 Conduction Relay – heat transfer
FPE-6 Motion-in-Action Relay – types of motion and units
FPE-7 Breathing in Action – breathing and energy
FPE-8 Flex and React Challenge – neuromuscular control
FPE-9 Move Like a Machine – the musculoskeletal system
Four stations in a circle:
Scoring: 3 points to the fastest team, 1 for proper form, 1 bonus for teamwork.
FPE-10 Adapt and Achieve – how the body adapts
Stations of 5 minutes each: Strength, Endurance, Flexibility, Recovery. There is no competition – only effort.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Physics ideas (balance, force, motion, gravity, conduction) and biology ideas (muscles, bones, breathing, circulation) are part of every movement.
- ✓Bullying has four roles – bully, target, bystander and upstander – and upstanders can stop it.
- ✓Society plays an active role in protecting victims of harassment, as shown in Chār Tālī.
- ✓Breathing and pulse rates rise with exercise intensity and return to baseline during recovery.
- ✓The musculoskeletal system adapts to strength, endurance and flexibility training, and rest lets muscles repair and grow.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Pair students of similar height and weight for the Horse Vault Race and demonstrate the chin-to-sternum 'horse' position first.
- →Use a drum beat for the 8-count mass drill and ask students to point to the muscle they feel working.
- →Rotate every student through bully, victim, bystander and upstander roles in Baraf Pānī and debrief feelings in circle time.
- →In the Conduction Relay, try objects of wood, plastic and metal and at different times of day to compare heat transfer.
- →Record Motion-in-Action results in both SI (m) and CGS (cm) on the board to practise unit conversion.
- →Demonstrate radial-pulse checking and make every student fill the breathing/pulse chart for all zones.
- →Keep Adapt and Achieve non-competitive and give effort awards such as 'Flexibility Star'.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student name the four bullying roles and give an upstander's response?
- Can the student explain conduction using the towel variation of the relay?
- Can the student record and compare resting and post-exercise pulse rates?
- Can the student match each station of Move Like a Machine to its movement type?
- Does the student complete the 1–5 self-assessment honestly?
