Unit 5: Fundamental Skills of Sports — Volleyball
Introduction
Volleyball is a fast-paced team sport played by two teams on a rectangular court divided by a net. The aim is to send the ball over the net so it lands in the opponent's court. Each team has six players on court, with roles such as spikers, setters, blockers and liberos. A team may use up to three touches to return the ball; a block touch is not counted. This unit teaches passing, serving, setting, spiking, blocking and digging.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Volleyball has six players per side, up to three touches per side, and the block touch is not counted.
- ✓The underhand pass uses locked elbows and forearms; the overhead pass uses fingertips in a triangle above the forehead.
- ✓Serves can be underhand (closed fist, pendulum swing) or overhead (near-vertical toss, heel of palm).
- ✓Setting prepares the ball for the spike; spiking hits the ball at its highest point with a wrist snap.
- ✓Blocking and digging are defensive skills; a serve uses stored potential energy converted into kinetic energy.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Check the underhand-pass grip (thumbs parallel, elbows locked) before any rally practice.
- →Use the circle-passing race so teams count returns and learn to call 'Mine!'.
- →Draw a pentagon target on the court for overhead-serve practice and let students track their scores.
- →Place a bucket on a raised table to make setting practice fun and precise.
- →Teach the left–right–left approach footwork for right-handed spikers slowly before adding a jump.
- →Use numbered positions on the court to practise clockwise rotation in the Ball Throw Activity.
- →Link each skill to science: discuss potential and kinetic energy during serving.
📋 Assessment Questions
