Chapter 7: Factors of Production
The Big Questions
"For a country like India, the largest contribution to growth and productivity will probably come about from more efficiently using land, labour and capital…"
— Bibek Debroy, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (2017–24)
Introduction
Every product — clothes, shoes, a phone — goes through a production process that uses resources or inputs. These inputs are called factors of production. Meet Ratna, who runs Pause Point, a restaurant on the city outskirts with a team of seven people. When she started five years ago she had to choose a location, arrange money for rent and equipment, hire staff, buy ingredients and plan. Businesses or enterprises (a firm, shop or factory) combine inputs to create goods and services — and job opportunities.
Key Concepts
Economics classifies factors of production into four types — land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship. Technology is a crucial facilitator that lets enterprises produce more with the same or fewer inputs.
1. Land (natural resources)
2. Labour (human resources)

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓The four factors of production are land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship; technology is a key facilitator.
- ✓Human capital — skills, knowledge and health — raises the quality of labour and is built through education, training, healthcare and work culture.
- ✓Capital includes money and durable assets, raised from savings, bank loans (interest) or the stock market (shares and dividends).
- ✓Entrepreneurs take risks, combine the factors and solve problems — e.g. J.R.D. Tata.
- ✓Factors are interconnected (labour- vs capital-intensive, supply chains), and producers have responsibilities to nature and workers (CSR law, 2014).
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with Ratna's Pause Point: ask students to list everything she needed and sort it into the four factors.
- →Have groups survey local shops and complete the book's inputs table.
- →Use the mobile-phone manufacturing flowchart to show how all factors combine.
- →Discuss kaizen by setting a 'one small improvement a day' class challenge.
- →Show images of stitched ships and śhilpa śhāstra sculpture to link skill heritage with human capital.
- →Role-play the 'Think like an economist' situations (rent doubles, helper quits, rival opens).
- →Explore the SWAYAM and NCS portals together if internet is available.
