Chapter 11: Dance as Visual Storytelling (Dance)
Introduction
Many Indian dance forms are rooted in storytelling. Indian dance is often called dṛiśhya-kāvya — visual poetry — because movement, gesture and facial expression communicate meaning clearly and powerfully. Dancers bring to life a huge range of stories: *Kālidāsa's Abhijñāna-Śhākuntalam*, modern versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet** (even in Kathak), the cycle of seasons from sowing to harvest, everyday scenes, and people's lived experiences. The Dyūta-krīḍā (dice game) scene from the Mahābhārata in Kathakali is one example shown in the book.
This chapter lets you creatively explore three of the four abhinayas learnt in Chapter 10 — āṅgika, vāchika and āhārya.
Key Ideas
1. Āṅgika Abhinaya — the body speaks
2. Vāchika Abhinaya — sound tells the story
3. Āhārya Abhinaya — what we see

Connect to Your Life
A school annual-day dance uses all three: your steps (āṅgika), the song or narration (vāchika) and your costume and props (āhārya).
Common Mistakes
Let's Reflect
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Understand Indian dance as dṛiśhya-kāvya (visual poetry) that tells stories.
- ✓Use āṅgika elements — sthāna, chārī, gati, utplavana, bhramarī, hastas — to communicate.
- ✓Explore vāchika through instrumental music, lyrical songs and one's own singing.
- ✓Identify dances through āhārya — costumes, make-up and rhythmic props.
- ✓Compare how different abhinayas change the way a story reaches the audience.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Show an image of the Badami Dancing Śhiva and let pairs copy three hand combinations.
- →Rotate groups through all three parts of Activity 11.2 in short segments.
- →Use a clapping circle with dha, ta, ka, dhin before dancing to instrumental music.
- →Bring real props (sticks, cymbals, cloth) to show how props add rhythm.
- →Turn Activity 11.3 into a costume-spotting quiz with regional maps.
- →Invite students to retell a simple story using only āṅgika, then add vāchika, then āhārya.
