Chapter 12: Cultural Connections Through Dance (Dance)
Introduction
Culture connects people beyond boundaries. Customs, traditions, regional ideas and beliefs shape culture, and people of different cultures can develop mutual respect through shared appreciation of dance. Dandiya and Bhangra have travelled with the Indian diaspora and are enjoyed worldwide — Bhangra appears in flashmobs in Birmingham, half-time shows at NBA games in the USA, stage competitions in Singapore, and Lohri celebrations in Punjab. Indian dance forms are also adopted by international dancers, promoting cross-cultural relations.
Key Ideas
1. A dance for every situation
From birth to death, India has dances for every part of life:
2. One story, many renditions
3. The Rāmāyaṇa across Southeast Asia
The figure of Hanumān appears in sculptures across Southeast Asia — e.g. the Flying Hanumān, Cambodia, Koh Ker style, 10th century CE — and in dance, such as C.K. Balagopalan's iconic Hanumān at Kalakshetra and Hanumān in the Royal Khmer Ballet's Reamker (1915).
"A sculpture captures movement in stillness, and dance captures stillness even in movement!"

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Explain how dance connects cultures and travels with the diaspora (Bhangra, Dandiya).
- ✓Link Indian dances to life events — birth, weddings, funerals, harvests, community joy.
- ✓Trace ancient maritime links (Bāli-yātrā) that spread a shared performance vocabulary.
- ✓Match Southeast Asian Rāmāyaṇa traditions to their countries and forms.
- ✓Plan, conduct and present a respectful dance interview/podcast.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with a map activity marking where Bhangra is performed worldwide.
- →Build a 'birth-to-death' timeline wall with dances for each life event.
- →Play short clips of Khon, Kecak and Reamker and compare Hanumān's movements.
- →Remind students of the safety note before trying any folk form.
- →Teach interview ethics — consent, respectful questions — before Activity 12.4.
- →Let groups fuse two dance forms and discuss how to stay respectful to both traditions.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student name dances for different life events with their states?
- Can the student correctly match five countries to their Rāmāyaṇa traditions?
- Can the student explain Bāli-yātrā and its link to Southeast Asia?
- Did the podcast/interview follow all three production stages and include consent?
