Chapter 14: Exploring the Fundamentals of Visual Arts (Visual Arts)
Introduction
The Visual Arts section of Madhurima opens with a verse from the Chitra-sūtra of the Viṣhṇu-dharmottara Purāṇa:
Satyaṁ cha vaiṇikaṁ chaiva nāgaraṁ miśhrameva cha |
Chitraṁ chatur-vidhaṁ proktaṁ tasya vakṣhyāmi lakṣhaṇam || (41.1)
>
There are four types of paintings — Satya (Realistic), Vaiṇika (Classical/Lyrical), Nāgara (Urban/Refined) and Miśhra (Mixed). I shall now describe their characteristics.
Chapter 14 begins with a simple idea: art is a reflection of society. It shows how people experienced life through the ages and how they responded to their surroundings. The Visual Arts are a powerful means of expression, especially when you cannot find words. Making art helps you discover hidden strengths as you imagine, reflect, research and experiment.
Key Ideas
Essentials for a visual artist
Think of a bag with many compartments. The first things in it:
Desirable traits of a visual artist
The book lists eleven dispositions:
The art journal
A journal is a record of everyday experiences — handwritten diaries, sketchbooks, blogs, vlogs, photographs, reels. It can hold text, drawings, pictures, moving images, sounds and tactile materials. At the end of the term your journals, sketches and finished work become your Visual Art portfolio.
Why keep one? A journal:
Just as scientists keep log books and sportspersons record timings, artists keep journals. Cave drawings give us insights into prehistoric people even though we don't know their languages.
Inspiring journals from history (Fig. 14.1): Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks, Frida Kahlo's diary, Rabindranath Tagore's poems with doodles, the Mughal artist Ustad Mansur, who documented birds, and Nandalal Bose's illustration of Tagore's poem 'Rikto'.

The seven elements of art (Activity 14.2)
Dedicate a journal page to each element:
Sketching
Sketching is spontaneous observation and drawing — like the warm-up of a sportsperson. Avoid copying from pictures. The first steps are always messy; courage, commitment and perseverance help you through, and sketches improve in a few weeks.
Sketching tips: sketches need not be perfect; sit at a reasonable distance; visualise basic shapes first; draw lightly and quickly; draw over the same image without an eraser so mistakes and corrections show; watch the negative space so the sketch fits the page; capture structure, proportion, posture and action; darken lines and add detail only when the basic form is right; focus detail on important parts.
Daily sketching schedule (Activity 14.3) — weekly target of 8 sketches:
Principles of visual design (Activity 14.4)
These guide the structure and arrangement of elements:
Find them in logos, advertisements, book covers, food wrappers and textbooks; cut out good and poorly designed examples and analyse them.

Artists & Traditions
Leonardo Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Rabindranath Tagore, Ustad Mansur (Mughal bird painter), Nandalal Bose, and Jamini Roy (Padma Bhushan), whose tempera painting Santhal dance the exercises ask you to analyse.
Connect to Your Life
Your phone gallery and the stickers you doodle in notebooks are already a kind of journal. Making it deliberate — with date, place and a line of thought — turns everyday seeing into artistic practice.
Common Mistakes
Let's Reflect
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Art reflects society and is a way to express what words cannot
- ✓A journal is the visual artist's most important tool and grows into a portfolio
- ✓The seven elements of art: point, line, shape/form, texture, colour, value, space
- ✓The six principles of design guide how elements are arranged
- ✓Regular observational sketching builds skill; avoid copying
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start each class with a 5-minute observational sketch of an object in the room
- →Show pages from Da Vinci, Kahlo and Tagore journals and ask what each reveals
- →Run the seven-element journal pages over a week, one element per day
- →Hold a 'design hunt' with old newspapers to find each principle of design
- →Model sketching without an eraser to normalise visible corrections
- →Review journals weekly for date, time and place
- →Display Jamini Roy's Santhal dance and discuss elements and balance
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student list all seven elements and distinguish them from principles?
- Does the journal show regular dated entries with notes?
- Can the student identify balance, rhythm and emphasis in a given artwork?
- Does the student sketch from observation rather than copying?
- Can the student explain the four types of painting in the Chitra-sūtra verse?
