Chapter 5: From Vision to Performance: Direction and Acting (Theatre)
Introduction
Chapter 5 is framed by Vīra Rasa — the rasa of courage and heroism, fitting for the director who must lead the team. It opens with a school rehearsal of 'The King Who Lost His Shoes' going hilariously wrong until the director calls, "Alright, pause!" She corrects the king's royal posture, restricts the guard's movement to the entrances, and helps the servant with voice, emotion, entry and position. Slowly the scene becomes a real story.
Without direction, a play is just noise and confusion. With guidance, it becomes an experience called 'theatre'.
Key Ideas — Direction
Role of the director
The director is the guiding vision of the play. Like a painter arranging colours, the director plans actors (dialogues, movements, entries, exits), props, costumes, sets, light and sound — in the right proportion, like ingredients in a tasty dish. The book calls the director "the captain of the ship": responsible for the team's decisions and answerable to the audience.
The process — from micro to macro
The director starts weeks before rehearsals and finishes after the show ends. They must know every detail of the script and hold the "big picture".
Stage division
A universal vocabulary of nine parts of the stage: Upstage Right, Upstage Centre, Upstage Left; Stage Right, Centre Stage, Stage Left; Downstage Right, Downstage Centre, Downstage Left — plus the proscenium line and the apron in front. It helps with:
Stage balance and composition
The stage should not look empty on one side or crowded on the other (balanced visual weight):
Movement on stage
Consolidating departments and rehearsals
The director aligns music, sound, costumes and lighting with each department's design, then holds run-throughs and stage rehearsals for actors and technical crew, polishing finer details.
Styles of direction
Key Ideas — Acting
If direction is the big picture, acting is feeling the heartbeat of the character.
Indian approaches
- Āṅgika — the body: bhedas (head, eyes etc.), hastas (gestures), postures.
- Vāchika — the voice and its modulations (vṛittis).
- Āhārya — accessories: props, jewellery, costume.
- Sāttvika — the inner experience (rasānubhava).
Global approaches (twentieth century)
Solo and group acting

Key Terms
Artists & Traditions
Konstantin Stanislavsky, Lee Strasberg, Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski, Stella Adler; Gaura-līlā and Gūsta-līlā, Bhūta-kola, Rammāṇ, Teyyam; the Nāṭyaśhāstra.
Connect to Your Life
A class project, a sports team or a school assembly also needs a "director" — someone who sees the big picture, plans each part and keeps everyone working together.
Common Mistakes
Let's Reflect
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓The director is the 'captain of the ship' who shapes the whole play through script work, visualisation, blocking, consolidating departments and run-throughs.
- ✓The stage is divided into nine areas (upstage/centre/downstage × right/centre/left); downstage and centre are the strongest positions, and stage directions are given from the actor's point of view.
- ✓Good composition uses clear focus, strong diagonals, levels and grouping; movement must be motivated and actors must avoid upstaging.
- ✓Styles of direction include realistic, abstract/symbolic, devised, script-based and collaborative.
- ✓Acting draws on Indian approaches (the Nāṭyaśhāstra's Chaturvidha Abhinaya — āṅgika, vāchika, āhārya, sāttvika; Gaura-līlā, Bhūta-kola, Rammāṇ, Teyyam) and global schools (Stanislavsky/Strasberg, Brecht, Grotowski, Stella Adler).
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Act out the opening rehearsal scene of 'The King Who Lost His Shoes' chaotically, then 'direct' it with the class to show the director's impact.
- →Mark the nine stage areas on the classroom floor with chalk or tape and call out positions for students to move to.
- →Use Activity 5.1 to let groups compare the same scene done with more āṅgika, more vāchika and no emotions.
- →Run Activity 5.2 'The living painting' using artworks from the textbook to connect Theatre with Visual Arts.
- →Contrast Stanislavsky and Brecht with a short scene played first for emotional truth and then with deliberate distance.
- →Show images or short clips of Teyyam, Rammāṇ and Bhūta-kola and locate each state on a map of India.
- →Guide pairs through the 3-hour workshop project for younger students, stressing planning, safety and reflection.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student describe the stages of a director's process from script work to run-throughs?
- Can the student name and locate all nine stage divisions and explain why downstage centre is powerful?
- Can the student distinguish the five styles of direction with an example of each?
- Can the student explain the four types of abhinaya in the Nāṭyaśhāstra?
- Can the student compare at least two global schools of acting (e.g., Stanislavsky and Brecht)?
