Chapter 6: Measuring Space: Perimeter and Area
Introduction
At the start of a 4 × 100 m relay, athletes in the outer lanes stand ahead of those in the inner lanes. This gap is the stagger. Is it unfair? To answer, we need the length around a circle — and that leads us to π, arc lengths, areas of triangles and 4-gons, and the area of a circle.
Key Ideas
Perimeter (6.1–6.2)
π through history
π is irrational (6.3)
π cannot be written as a ratio of two integers (proved by Lambert, 1761). So π ≈ 22/7 but π ≠ 22/7. Pi Day is 14 March (3-14); Pi Approximation Day is 22 July (22/7).
Arc length (6.4)
Circumference = πd = 2πr. By symmetry a semicircle is πr and a quarter circle πr/2. An arc subtending θ° at the centre has length 2πr × θ/360.
400 m track: two straights of 84.39 m (168.78 m) and two semicircles of radius 36.5 + 0.3 = 36.8 m, i.e. one full circle 2 × 3.1416 × 36.8 = 231.22 m. Total 400 m. Outer lanes have bigger semicircles, so they need a stagger.
Area (6.6–6.8)
Area of a circle (6.10)

Maths Words
Historical / Indian Connections
Āryabhaṭa's 3.1416 and the word āsanna; Brahmagupta's √10 and his cyclic 4-gon formula; Mādhava's infinite series; Nīlakaṇṭha's slicing proof; and Baudhāyana's squaring of a rectangle — Indian mathematicians shaped this whole chapter.
Common Mistakes
Maths in Daily Life
Race-track staggers, wheel revolutions and odometers, fencing and tiling fields, pizza and cake slices (sectors), wiper blades sweeping a windscreen, and land surveying with Heron's formula all use this chapter.
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓π is the constant ratio of circumference to diameter; it is irrational, so 22/7, 3.14 and 355/113 are approximations.
- ✓Circumference = 2πr, arc length = 2πr × θ/360, circle area = πr², sector area = πr² × θ/360.
- ✓Areas of rectangles, parallelograms and triangles are linked by cut-and-rearrange arguments; a median halves a triangle's area.
- ✓Heron's formula finds a triangle's area from its sides; Brahmagupta's formula does the same for cyclic 4-gons and generalises Heron's.
- ✓Indian mathematicians (Baudhāyana, Āryabhaṭa, Brahmagupta, Mādhava, Nīlakaṇṭha) made key contributions to π and area.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Open with a real photo of a relay start and ask students to explain the stagger.
- →Do the cotton-reel thread experiment in class and compare everyone's C/D values.
- →Build a class timeline of π approximations from Mesopotamia to Mādhava.
- →Cut a paper circle into 16 slices and rearrange them into a near-parallelogram (Nīlakaṇṭha's idea).
- →Use four rods or GeoGebra to show a rhombus of side 3 with different areas, motivating Brahmagupta's condition.
- →Have students verify Heron's formula on the 3-4-5 and 7-24-25 triangles using both methods.
- →Assign a school-ground task: measure a circular flower bed or track curve and compute its perimeter and area.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Find radius, circumference, arc length and sector area from given data.
- Use Heron's formula to find the area of a triangle given sides or a perimeter and ratio.
- Explain why the stagger is needed on a curved running track.
- Show that a median divides a triangle into two equal-area triangles.
- Verify Brahmagupta's formula for a rectangle and explain how it reduces to Heron's formula.
