Chapter 11: Reproduction: How Life Continues
Think It Over
Introduction
Every organism is born, grows, matures, reproduces and eventually dies. Reproduction is the biological process by which living beings produce new individuals of their own kind — this is how life continues. A mango tree may die, but its seeds grow into new mango plants. Living beings reproduce asexually (one parent, near-identical offspring) or sexually (two parents, offspring inherit a mix of characteristics). Small differences, accumulated over many generations, help living beings adapt and sometimes give rise to new species.
Key Concepts
11.1 Asexual Reproduction
Methods used in agriculture and horticulture:
Other asexual methods:
The central process in asexual reproduction is mitosis — cell division producing two daughter cells with the same chromosomes as the parent. The offspring are clones.
11.2 Sexual Reproduction
11.2.2 Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
11.3–11.4 Reproduction in Animals
11.5 Reproduction in Human Beings

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Asexual reproduction (vegetative propagation, budding, spore formation) involves one parent and produces genetically identical clones through mitosis.
- ✓Meiosis halves the chromosome number to form gametes; random mixing of chromosomes in sexual reproduction creates variation that helps species adapt.
- ✓In flowering plants, pollination transfers pollen to the stigma; fertilisation forms a zygote, the ovule becomes the seed and the ovary becomes the fruit.
- ✓Animals show external or internal fertilisation with different numbers of eggs and survival rates of young ones.
- ✓Human reproduction involves gamete formation, ovulation, fertilisation, implantation and pregnancy; menstrual hygiene and responsible choices protect health.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Take students to the school garden or invite a gardener to demonstrate cutting, grafting and layering (Activity 11.1).
- →Grow bread mould in a moist chamber over three days and observe hyphae and spore sacs under the microscope with cotton blue stain.
- →Use coloured bead pairs (Activity 11.4) to let students discover that 3 pairs give 8 combinations, then ask them to imagine 23 pairs.
- →Dissect locally available flowers and let students fill Table 11.1 for sepals, petals, stamens and pistil.
- →Teach human reproduction in a calm, factual, respectful tone; allow anonymous question boxes and use the book's correct scientific terms.
- →Discuss menstrual hygiene with both boys and girls using the 'Period is your pride' message to reduce stigma.
- →Link to careers and society: KVKs, tissue-culture labs, ASHA workers, IVF and the law against prenatal sex determination.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain why asexually produced offspring are genetically identical to the parent?
- Can the student describe how meiosis and random combination of chromosomes create variation?
- Can the student name the parts of a flower and sequence pollination, fertilisation, zygote, seed and fruit formation?
- Can the student compare external and internal fertilisation using the data in Table 11.4?
- Can the student describe ovulation, fertilisation, implantation and menstruation, and list hygiene and responsible-health practices?
