Chapter 12: Magnetic Effects of Electric Current
Introduction
In the previous chapter we studied the heating effect of current. This chapter explores another effect: electric current produces a magnetic field. The connection was discovered in 1820 by Hans Christian Oersted, who noticed a compass needle deflect near a current-carrying wire. The unit of magnetic field strength, the oersted, is named after him. This link between electricity and magnetism underlies motors, electromagnets and MRI.
Key Concepts
1. Magnetic field and field lines
2. Field due to a straight current-carrying conductor
Right-hand thumb rule: Hold the current-carrying straight conductor in your right hand with the thumb pointing in the direction of current; the curled fingers give the direction of the magnetic field lines.
3. Field due to a circular loop
4. Solenoid
5. Force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field
Fleming's left-hand rule: Stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of your left hand mutually perpendicular. If the forefinger points along the magnetic field and the middle finger along the current, the thumb gives the direction of motion (force) on the conductor.
6. Magnetism in medicine
Weak ion currents in nerve cells produce tiny magnetic fields (about one-billionth of the Earth's field). The heart and brain produce significant fields. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields inside the body to image body parts for diagnosis.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Recognise that an electric current produces a magnetic field (Oersted, 1820)
- ✓Draw and interpret field lines for a bar magnet, straight wire, circular loop and solenoid
- ✓Apply the right-hand thumb rule for field direction and Fleming's left-hand rule for force direction
- ✓Explain why a solenoid behaves like a bar magnet and can form an electromagnet
- ✓Describe domestic wiring: live, neutral and earth wires, 15 A/5 A circuits, fuse, short-circuit and overloading
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Repeat Oersted's experiment (Activity 12.1) with a thick copper wire and a compass, reversing the current
- →Let students sprinkle iron filings around a bar magnet and a solenoid and compare the patterns
- →Practise both hand rules physically with a pencil as the wire before solving questions
- →Build a simple electromagnet with a nail, wire and cell to show the effect of more turns
- →Use Activity 12.7 (rod in a horseshoe magnet) to introduce Fleming's rule before stating it
- →Show a three-pin plug and identify live, neutral and earth pins and wire colours
- →Discuss real incidents of short-circuit fires to explain the importance of fuses and earthing
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student draw field lines around a straight wire and a solenoid with correct directions?
- Can the student apply the right-hand thumb rule to a given current direction?
- Can the student use Fleming's left-hand rule to find the direction of force on a conductor?
- Can the student explain the function of the earth wire and the fuse in a domestic circuit?
- Can the student distinguish between short-circuiting and overloading?
