Chapter 2: The Origin and Evolution of the Earth
Introduction
"Twinkle, twinkle little star…" — this chapter explains how stars, planets and finally our earth came into being, and how the earth evolved from a barren, rocky, hot object with a thin atmosphere of hydrogen and helium into a planet with water, air and life. It opens Unit II: The Earth.
Key Concepts
Early theories — origin of the earth
Modern theory — origin of the universe
The Big Bang Theory (also called the expanding universe hypothesis). Edwin Hubble (1920) provided evidence that the universe is expanding — galaxies move further apart over time.
Stages in the Big Bang Theory
An alternative was Hoyle's steady state concept (universe roughly the same at any time), but present evidence favours the expanding universe.
Star formation
A light year is a measure of distance, not time. Light travels at 300,000 km/second; one light year = 9.461 × 10¹² km. The mean sun–earth distance of 149,598,000 km equals 8.311 minutes of light travel.
Formation of planets
Evolution of the earth (4,600 million years to present)
Evolution of the lithosphere
Evolution of atmosphere and hydrosphere — three stages
Origin of life
Scientists describe it as a chemical reaction that generated complex organic molecules able to duplicate themselves, turning inanimate matter into living substance. The record is found in rocks as fossils; structures related to blue algae are found in formations older than about 3,000 million years.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Early theories (Kant–Laplace Nebular Hypothesis, revised by Schmidt and Weizascar in 1950) explained the earth's origin from a solar nebula.
- ✓The Big Bang Theory explains the universe's origin 13.7 billion years ago; Hubble (1920) showed the universe is expanding.
- ✓Stars form from nebulae; planets form from planetesimals through cohesion and accretion.
- ✓The layered earth formed by differentiation; the atmosphere evolved in three stages — loss of primordial atmosphere, degassing, and photosynthesis.
- ✓Oceans formed within 500 million years of the earth's formation, and life began about 3,800 million years ago.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Do the balloon experiment in class and discuss why it is only 'partially correct'.
- →Build a class timeline strip from 13.7 billion years ago to today, marking each event from the chapter.
- →Use a jar of sand, gravel and water shaken and left to settle to demonstrate differentiation by density.
- →Calculate with students how far light travels in a year to make 'light year' concrete.
- →Draw the three stages of planet formation as a comic strip.
- →Discuss the Project Work: what is NASA's Stardust mission and why study stardust?
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain the stages of the Big Bang Theory with figures (13.7 billion years, 3 minutes, 300,000 years, 4,500 K)?
- Can the student describe how planets formed from planetesimals?
- Can the student explain differentiation and the resulting layers of the earth?
- Can the student describe the three stages in the evolution of the atmosphere?
- Can the student give the approximate ages of the earth, oceans and life?
