Chapter 7: Globalisation
Introduction
Janardhan works nights in a call centre as "John", serving US clients he will never meet. Ramdhari buys his daughter a cycle made in China and, earlier, a Barbie doll from the US. Sarika, a first-generation learner, takes a job her family's women never dreamt of. Each shows an aspect of globalisation — the globalisation of services, the movement of commodities, and a conflict of values from new opportunities. The chapter analyses the concept, its causes, its political, economic and cultural consequences, its impact on India, and resistance to it.
