Chapter 3: Meeting Life Challenges
Introduction
The chapter opens with Raj, who studies till 1 a.m. before his final examination, tosses in bed, skips breakfast and finds his mind going blank when he opens the question paper. Many students live through such moments. Life poses challenges all the time, but a challenge is not necessarily stressful – much depends on how it is viewed. A number 11 batsman and an opening batsman see a fast bowler's delivery very differently. This chapter explains the nature, types and sources of stress, its effects on psychological functioning and health, ways of coping, and the life skills and factors that promote positive health and well-being.
Key Concepts
Nature of Stress
Cognitive Theory of Stress (Lazarus)
Types of Stress
Sources of Stress
Effects of Stress
General Adaptation Syndrome (Selye)
Criticism: it gives a very limited role to psychological factors such as appraisal.
Stress and the Immune System
Psychoneuroimmunology studies links between mind, brain and immune system. White blood cells (leucocytes) include T cells (T-helper cells are attacked by HIV), B cells (produce antibodies) and natural killer cells (fight viruses and tumours). Reduced natural killer cell cytotoxicity is found in students facing important examinations, bereaved persons and those severely depressed. Social support improves immune functioning.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle is the overall pattern of decisions and behaviours that determine health and quality of life. Balanced low-fat diet, regular exercise and positive thinking enhance health and longevity.
Coping with Stress
Stress Management Techniques
Relaxation techniques (from lower body to facial muscles, with deep breathing), meditation procedures, biofeedback (three stages: awareness, control in quiet conditions, transfer to daily life), creative visualisation, cognitive behavioural techniques – Meichenbaum's stress inoculation training (assessment, stress reduction techniques, application and follow-through) – and exercise (at least four times a week for 30 minutes with warm-up, exercise and cool-down).

Board Exam Focus
Review questions ask about the concept, symptoms and sources of stress, the GAS model, coping, life skills, positive health and the immune system.
Outline 1 – GAS model. Selye's animal and hospital studies → alarm reaction → resistance → exhaustion → example of a prolonged examination period → criticism of limited psychological role.
Outline 2 – Ways of coping. Define coping → Endler and Parker's three strategies with examples → Lazarus and Folkman's problem- vs emotion-focused coping → stress management techniques.
Outline 3 – Life skills. Define life skills → assertiveness → time management → rational thinking → improving relationships → self-care → overcoming unhelpful habits.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Stress is a transactional process between person and environment; eustress aids performance while distress causes wear and tear.
- ✓Lazarus's primary and secondary appraisals determine whether an event is felt as harm, threat or challenge and whether resources are sufficient.
- ✓Stress may be physical/environmental, psychological or social, and arises from life events, daily hassles and traumatic events.
- ✓Prolonged stress affects emotions, body, cognition and behaviour, follows Selye's GAS (alarm, resistance, exhaustion) and weakens the immune system.
- ✓Coping (task-, emotion-, avoidance-oriented; problem- vs emotion-focused), stress management techniques, life skills, hardiness, resilience and social support promote positive health.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Open with Raj's examination story and invite students (anonymously) to share similar experiences, linking to Box 3.2 on examination anxiety.
- →Use the electricity analogy to explain eustress and distress with a simple arousal-performance sketch.
- →Draw Lazarus's two-level appraisal as a flow chart with a board-exam example.
- →Have students do Activity 3.4 and justify which behaviours are problem-focused.
- →Demonstrate a short relaxation or deep-breathing exercise in class to make stress management concrete.
- →Ask groups to prepare posters on the six life skills with situations from school life.
- →Discuss resilience using I HAVE, I AM, I CAN and let students identify their own strengths.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student define stress, eustress, stressor and strain, and explain Lazarus's appraisals?
- Can the student classify types and sources of stress with examples?
- Can the student describe the effects of stress, the GAS stages and the link with the immune system?
- Can the student compare coping strategies and suggest stress management techniques?
- Can the student explain life skills and factors that promote positive health and well-being?
