Chapter 6: Between Home and School

Introduction

Between Home and School is Chapter 2 of Unit 3, Going Places, in Mridang. Ravi, a Class 2 child, tells us how he and his friend walk to school through fields and groves, having fun on the way — and still reaching school on time. The chapter helps children talk about their own route to school and notice the world around them.

What's in this Chapter

The reading:

"Hello, I am Ravi. I study in Class 2. My friend and I go to school on foot."

They pass through the paddy fields, the mango grove and then reach the main road. That is the shortest route to school.

"What fun we have every day!" —

Let us draw: the route from your home to your school.

Let us write: circle what Ravi and his friend see — canals, mango grove, paddy fields, lizards, main road, trees (not a hospital, water park, bank, park, cars or train).

Name interesting things you see between home and school; ask family members about a long journey — where they went and how they travelled.

Let us do: make sentences with gate, road, tree, lunch, lizard; cut out vehicle pictures from old magazines to make a class chart.

Tips for Parents & Teachers

Walk or talk through the child's route to school and name what you pass.

Draw a simple map together: home, turns, landmarks, school.

Practise 'ch' words with real objects: chalk, chair, chart.

Talk about safety on the way — watch traffic, walk on the side, never jump near deep water alone.

Ask a grandparent about a long journey and let the child share it.

Common Mistakes

Saying Ravi goes by bus — he goes on foot.

Circling "water park" or "hospital" — these are not in Ravi's story.

Thinking the children were late because they played — the story says they reach school on time.

Spelling lunch as "lunh" — remember the ch at the end.
