Chapter 7: This is My Town

Introduction

This is My Town is Chapter 3 of Unit 3, Going Places, in Mridang. It is a fun pattern poem that zooms in from a town to a street, a house, a room, a bed, a basket and finally some flowers — and then zooms back out again. It helps children understand where things are, using in and on, and learn their own address.

What's in this Chapter

The poem (going in):

  • "This is my town. / In my town, / There are streets."
  • "In my street, / There are houses. / In my house, / There are rooms."
  • "In my room, / There is a bed. / On the bed, / There is a basket. / In the basket, / There are some flowers."
  • The poem (coming back out):

  • "Flowers in a basket. / Basket on the bed. / Bed in the room. / Room in the house. / House in the street. / Street in the town."
  • Sight words: in, this, that, there, my.

New words (as listed in the book): train, town, street, house, flower, basket.

    Key Ideas

  • Big places contain smaller places: town → street → house → room → bed → basket → flowers.
  • We use in for inside (flowers in the basket) and on for on top (basket on the bed).
  • "There is" is used for one thing (there is a bed); "there are" for many (there are streets).
  • Every child should know their own address.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Let us speak: What do you see in the picture? What is the name of your town or city? What is the name of your street?
  • Let us write: form words from letters in circles (bed, room, town) and make sentences with them.
  • Write your home address: name/house number, street, area, town, state, country.
  • Let us listen: circle the word the teacher says in each pair — fan/fin, wall/well, house/mouse, lane/line, skin/swim.
  • Let us do: count how many times the letters e and u appear in the poem; spot the differences between two pictures.
  • Let us draw: add whatever is needed to complete a picture.
  • 'sh' sound: shirt, shell, shoe; fill in — "The sun is shining… T-shirt and shorts… a new shirt… folding a shawl… polishing his shoes."
  • Words to Learn

  • town – a place where many people live, smaller than a city (कस्बा)
  • street – a road with houses (गली)
  • house – a building where a family lives (घर)
  • room – a part of a house with walls (कमरा)
  • bed – what we sleep on (बिस्तर)
  • basket – a container for carrying things (टोकरी)
  • flower – the coloured part of a plant (फूल)
  • address – where you live (पता)
  • shawl – a warm cloth worn over the shoulders (शॉल)
  • shining – giving bright light (चमकना)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Act out the poem with nesting boxes or drawings: a big circle (town), a smaller one (street), and so on.
  • Help the child learn the family address by heart — house number, street, town, state.
  • Play an "in/on" game with a basket and toys: "Put the ball in the basket." "Put the basket on the chair."
  • Practise the 'sh' words with real objects: shoe, shirt, shawl.
  • Say one word from each listening pair clearly and let the child circle it.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Saying "flowers on the basket" — the flowers are in the basket; the basket is on the bed.
  • Mixing up the order of places; the poem goes town → street → house → room → bed → basket → flowers.
  • Using "there is" for many things — say "there are streets".
  • Confusing fan and fin, wall and well; listen carefully to the middle sound.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recite the pattern poem and say the order: town, street, house, room, bed, basket, flowers.
    • ✓Use 'in' and 'on' correctly to describe where things are.
    • ✓Use 'there is' for one thing and 'there are' for many things.
    • ✓Write one's own home address: house number, street, area, town, state and country.
    • ✓Hear and read the 'sh' sound (shirt, shoe, shawl, shining, shorts).

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Draw nested boxes on the board and fill them in as you recite the poem.
    • →Recite the second half slowly so children notice how it reverses the first half.
    • →Help each child find out the name of their street and write their address.
    • →Use the fan/fin, wall/well listening activity to sharpen listening; say one word from each pair clearly.
    • →Use the poem to talk about the diversity of languages and places in India, as the teacher's note suggests.
    • →Bring a shirt, shell and shoe for the 'sh' activity.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child say what is in the town, the street, the house and the room?
    2. Can the child complete 'Basket ___ the bed' and 'Flowers ___ a basket'?
    3. Can the child write their full address?
    4. Can the child hear the difference between fan and fin, house and mouse?
    5. Can the child fill in 'sh' words correctly?
