Chapter 11: Filling and Lifting
Introduction
Filling and Lifting introduces two new kinds of measuring: how much a container holds (capacity) and how heavy something is (weight). It begins with a juice-shop challenge: drink 6 big glasses of juice and get your money back. Chintu says he could drink 6 small glasses, but not 6 big ones. The teacher's note explains that a bigger glass means you can drink fewer glasses.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Capacity tells how much a container can hold; it can be compared by pouring into same-sized containers.
- ✓Small containers can be used to fill a big one, and the quantity stays the same.
- ✓The litre is a standard unit for liquids; 2 half litres or 4 quarter litres make 1 litre.
- ✓Heavier objects go down on a pan-balance; weight can be measured with coins, erasers or matchboxes of sand.
- ✓The kilogram is a standard unit of weight; objects can be half, quarter or more than 1 kg.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with the juice-shop poster and ask whether children would take the challenge, as the book does.
- →Do the guess-and-pour activity with real water so children test their guesses.
- →Bring measuring vessels of 1 litre, half litre and quarter litre, as the teacher's note advises.
- →Use a toy pan-balance with coins or erasers as weights.
- →Invite a vegetable vendor or bring a pan-balance so children see real weighing.
- →Discuss the plastic-bottle fact and encourage children to carry reusable bottles.
- →Let children explain their reasoning in the tricky-balls puzzle before revealing a method.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child explain how Ritu's sister found out who drank the most milk?
- Can the child guess and then check how many small vessels fill a bigger one?
- Can the child say whether a glass, bowl or bucket holds more or less than 1 litre?
- Can the child use a pan-balance to say which object is heavier?
- Can the child sort objects as more than or less than 1 kilogram?
