Chapter 1: Papa's Spectacles (Unit 1: Let's Have Fun)
About the Chapter
Papa's Spectacles is the first poem in Santoor, Grade 5, and opens Unit 1: Let's Have Fun. It is a short, funny poem of four stanzas, told by a child. It is written to be recited aloud ("Let us Recite"), so rhythm and rhyme matter a lot.
The Poem in Brief
Stanza 1 – The problem
Today our papa / Is searching everywhere, / He has lost his spectacles, / It was his only pair!
Papa has lost his glasses. It is a big problem because it was his only pair.
Stanza 2 – Why it matters
He can't read the newspaper, / He can't watch TV, / He can't cut the vegetables, / Oh! Where can it be?
Without his spectacles Papa cannot do his everyday jobs: reading the newspaper, watching TV or cutting vegetables.
Stanza 3 – The search
He checked inside his pockets, / He glanced under his chair, / He searched near the window, / He looked everywhere.
Papa searches in his pockets, under his chair and near the window. Notice the different "looking" verbs: checked, glanced, searched, looked.
Stanza 4 – The funny ending
I told him, "Stop, Papa!" / I went up close, and said! / "Papa, your spectacles / Are right there on your head!"
The child solves the mystery: the spectacles were on Papa's head all along! This surprise ending is the joke of the poem.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Recite a humorous poem with rhythm and notice rhyming pairs (pair–everywhere, said–head)
- ✓Understand the surprise ending: the spectacles were on Papa's head all along
- ✓Use 'a pair of ...' correctly and arrange words in ascending order
- ✓Use prepositions (in, on, around, among, above, before, after) in a story
- ✓Hear the difference between similar-sounding word pairs and identify homophones
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Hide a pair of spectacles on your own head before class and 'search' for them, then let students discover them, just like the poem
- →Recite the poem with actions: pockets, under the chair, near the window, then point to the head on the last line
- →Bring real objects (handkerchief, towel, sari/dupatta, bedsheet) for a hands-on ascending-order activity
- →Play 'Pair Hunt': students name as many 'a pair of ___' items in the classroom as they can in two minutes
- →Read the word pairs in 'Let us Listen' 3–4 times each and have students raise a hand only when the pair sounds different
- →Make a class chart of words for 'father' in the languages students speak at home
- →Model the first two lines of the poem-to-story task on the board in the present tense
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student say where Papa finally finds his spectacles and why it is funny?
- Can the student name three places Papa searched and three things he cannot do without spectacles?
- Can the student arrange given objects or numbers in ascending order?
- Can the student fill in the prepositions in the 'spectacles' story correctly?
- Can the student retell the poem as a short story in one consistent tense?
