Chapter 2: Gone with the Scooter (Unit 1: Let's Have Fun)

About the Chapter

Gone with the Scooter is a short, funny story in Unit 1: Let's Have Fun of Santoor, Grade 5. It is about a boy who finds a lost ball, tries to be honest about it, plays hockey with his friends, and then loses the ball in a surprising way.

The Story in Brief

Finding the ball

It is a summer afternoon. Gopi is sitting in the veranda, reading a book. He hears something rustling past and falling with a thud in the garden. He thinks it may be a mango. He searches the thick grass near the fence and the bushes, and finds nothing. Then he sees a white ball on a heap of dry leaves. It is a hockey ball.

Gopi wondered, "Whose ball could this be?"

His mother calls him in because it is very hot. Gopi drinks water, lies down and decides:

"I can't keep this ball for myself. I will ask around."

At the playground

In the evening Gopi goes to the playground where his friends play hockey and asks who has lost a ball.

  • Manoj says he lost a ball four months ago, so it can't be his.
  • Ramani jokes, "Then the ball is mine," and when asked its colour says, "Show me the ball and I will tell you," smilingly.
  • Deepak boasts that his father bought him a brand-new football. Gopi replies, "The ball I found is a hockey ball."
  • Everyone laughs. Manoj grabs the ball and tosses it to Deepak. Gopi shouts, "Stop! I say, stop! Let's play before it gets dark."

The game and the funny ending

Manoj becomes the goalkeeper. Gopi stands at the centre with the stick and passes to Deepak, who drives the ball to Ramani. Ramani dribbles it to Jay. Jay hits it so hard that it flies past the playground gate and lands in the basket of a passing scooter. The scooterist is unaware and drives away.

By the time the children ran to the gate, the scooter was gone … and so was the ball.

The children look at each other and burst into laughter.

    Characters

  • Gopi – honest and responsible; he does not keep what isn't his.
  • Manoj – likes being the goalkeeper; he grabs the ball.
  • Ramani – playful; jokes that the ball is hers.
  • Deepak – boasts about his new football.
  • Jay – hits the powerful shot that sends the ball away.
  • Values

  • Honesty: return things that are not yours.
  • Sportsmanship and fun: the friends laugh at the loss instead of fighting.
  • Road safety: the scooterist wears a helmet, and a pillion rider should wear one too.
  • Word Power

  • rustling – a soft crackling sound, like dry leaves (सरसराहट)
  • thud – a dull sound of something heavy falling (धम्म की आवाज़)
  • veranda – an open, roofed area outside a house (बरामदा)
  • heap – a pile (ढेर)
  • boast – to speak too proudly about yourself (डींग मारना)
  • grab – to take something with a sudden movement (झपटना)
  • dribble – to move a ball with small taps in hockey or football (गेंद को छोटे-छोटे धक्कों से आगे बढ़ाना)
  • unaware – not knowing (अनजान)
  • goalkeeper – the player who guards the goal (गोलकीपर)
  • burst into laughter – to suddenly start laughing loudly (ठहाका लगाना)
  • Grammar & Language Focus

  • Matching meanings: dribble, boast, rustle, grab.
  • Linking words: since, however, because, when. Example: "Gopi completed his work because he wanted to go outside and play. However, when he reached the playground nobody was there."
  • Adverbs of frequency (how many times?): usually, often, regularly, always, never.
  • Adverbs of time (when?): today, now, yesterday, immediately.

Example: "Gopi usually plays hockey at school but today he is studying."

  • Long and short 'oo': long 'oo' in school, maroon, scooter, bloom, food, moon; short 'oo' in hood, foot, shook, look, book, took.
  • Compound words: sun + rise = sunrise, foot + ball = football, sun + set = sunset, basket + ball = basketball, sun + flower = sunflower, volley + ball = volleyball, sun + shine = sunshine, base + ball = baseball.
  • 'ai' words: chair, rain, train, paint, brain, snail, mail, sail, tail, stairs.
  • Let's Talk / Let's Write

  • Let us Speak: a chain story. The teacher gives one sentence and each student adds one.
  • Let us Write: write a conversation between Gopi, Ramani, Deepak, Manoj and Jay after the ball is gone.
  • Let us Do: make and play the board game "Tigers and Goats" (3 tigers, 13 goats).
  • Let us Explore: make a chart of indoor and outdoor games, and write a mini biography of a sportsperson.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Thinking the ball was a football. It was a hockey ball (Deepak's football was a different ball).
  • Confusing Manoj (lost a ball four months ago; goalkeeper) with Jay (hit the final shot).
  • Mixing up adverbs of frequency and adverbs of time. Ask "How often?" for frequency and "When?" for time.
  • Spelling veranda as "varanda".
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Follow the sequence of events: the thud, the search, finding the hockey ball, asking friends, the game, and the scooter
    • ✓Understand Gopi's honesty in trying to return the ball to its owner
    • ✓Identify which character said each dialogue (Gopi, Deepak, Manoj, Ramani)
    • ✓Tell adverbs of frequency (usually, often, regularly) from adverbs of time (today, now, yesterday)
    • ✓Hear and use long 'oo' and short 'oo' sounds and form compound words

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Before reading, drop a ball behind a desk to make a 'thud' and crumple paper for 'rustling', then ask students to guess the sounds
    • →Have five students act as Gopi, Manoj, Ramani, Deepak and Jay and read their dialogues aloud
    • →Draw the playground on the board and trace the ball's path: Gopi → Deepak → Ramani → Jay → gate → scooter basket
    • →Use a 'How often? / When?' sorting chart for adverbs, with students' own daily routines
    • →Hold a 'long oo / short oo' clapping game: clap once for short (book), stretch arms for long (moon)
    • →Start a road-safety discussion from the scooterist's helmet, including the pillion rider
    • →Make the Tigers and Goats board in groups and play it in the last period

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student describe how and where Gopi found the ball?
    2. Can the student match each dialogue to its speaker and listener?
    3. Can the student explain why everyone laughed at the end?
    4. Can the student underline adverbs and label them as frequency or time?
    5. Can the student sort words into long 'oo' and short 'oo' sounds?
