Chapter 3: The Rainbow (Unit 2: My Colourful World)

About the Chapter

The Rainbow is a short poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti. It opens Unit 2: My Colourful World in Santoor, Grade 5. The poet compares things made by people (boats, ships, bridges) with things made by nature (clouds, the rainbow), and says nature's creations are prettier by far.

The Poem

Boats sail on the rivers, / And ships sail on the seas; / But clouds that sail across the sky / Are prettier far than these.
There are bridges on the rivers, / As pretty as you please; / But the bow that bridges heaven, / And overtops the trees, / And builds a road from earth to sky, / Is prettier far than these.

Stanza 1 – Boats, ships and clouds

Boats sail on rivers and ships sail on seas, but the clouds that "sail" across the sky are much prettier. Here "these" means the boats and ships.

Stanza 2 – Bridges and the rainbow

There are pretty bridges on rivers, but the bow (the rainbow) that stretches across the sky, rises higher than the trees and seems to build a road from earth to sky is even prettier. Here "these" means the bridges on the rivers.

Poetic ideas

  • The clouds are described as if they sail like boats.
  • The rainbow is called a "bow" because it is curved like an archer's bow.
  • The rainbow "bridges heaven": like a bridge, it seems to join two ends of the sky.
  • Rhyming words: seas – these, please – trees – these.
  • Message

Human-made things are beautiful, but nature's beauty is greater. The poem asks us to look up and enjoy the sky, the clouds and the rainbow.

    Word Power

  • bow – a curved shape; here, the rainbow (धनुष / इंद्रधनुष)
  • bridges (verb) – joins two places, like a bridge (जोड़ता है)
  • overtops – rises higher than (ऊपर उठ जाता है)
  • heaven – here, the sky (आकाश)
  • sail – to move across water or the sky (तैरना / चलना)
  • prettier far – much more beautiful (कहीं अधिक सुंदर)
  • VIBGYOR – Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red (इंद्रधनुष के सात रंग)
  • droplets – very small drops (बूँदें)
  • Grammar & Language Focus

  • Anagrams from the poem: sial → sail, vierr → river, sae → sea, oduscl → clouds, risebgd → bridges, nhveea → heaven, eoptvros → overtops, owb → bow, droa → road.
  • Rhyming words (by sound, not spelling): ship – chip, trip; tree – bee, sea; rain – train, pain.
  • Friend words (compound words): rain + bow = rainbow, tea + cup = teacup, wrist + watch = wristwatch, arm + chair = armchair, earth + worm = earthworm, sun + flower = sunflower, table + cloth = tablecloth, note + book = notebook, ear + ring = earring, tooth + brush = toothbrush.
  • Same word as noun and verb:
  • - "I have seen a bridge made of roots in Meghalaya." (noun)

    - "Some planks of wood were used to bridge the stream." (verb)

    - Also: cut, bat, picture, cry, filter, dance, plant, paint, fly, face.

  • Opposites beginning with 's': large – small, weak – strong, fast – slow, rough – smooth, dull – sharp/shiny, curved – straight, finish – start, addition – subtraction, complicated – simple, mild – strong/spicy, blunt – sharp.
  • Science link: when sunlight passes through rain droplets it splits into seven colours. Isaac Newton made a spinning disc of the seven colours to show that white light is made of many colours.
  • Colour mixing: red + yellow = orange; red + white = pink; blue + yellow = green; red + blue = purple.
  • Let's Talk / Let's Write

  • Let us Speak: recite the short poems Colours and Aachoo! in a happy, an angry and a surprised voice.
  • Let us Write: a paragraph of 80–100 words about a journey you made (when, where, with whom, food, sights), in the past tense.
  • Let us Explore: types of boats, and a group discussion on human-made versus natural things.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Thinking "bow" here means bending down or a ribbon bow. It means the rainbow, which is curved like a bow.
  • Using "these" wrongly. In stanza 1 it means boats and ships; in stanza 2 it means bridges.
  • True or false: "Boats sail on the sea" is false in the poem (boats sail on rivers; ships sail on seas).
  • Getting VIBGYOR out of order. Violet is first and red is last.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recite and understand 'The Rainbow' by Christina Rossetti, comparing human-made and natural beauty
    • ✓Explain what 'bow' and 'these' refer to in each stanza
    • ✓Form compound ('friend') words and recognise that one word can be a noun and a verb (bridge)
    • ✓Find rhymes by sound and give opposites starting with 's'
    • ✓Remember the seven colours of the rainbow with VIBGYOR and know how a rainbow forms

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Show a picture of a rainbow over a river bridge and ask: which is prettier, and why?
    • →Make a two-column board chart, 'Made by people' (boats, ships, bridges) vs 'Made by nature' (clouds, rainbow)
    • →Create a rainbow in class with a glass of water or a prism in sunlight, then link it to VIBGYOR
    • →Turn the anagram task into a race between rows
    • →Recite 'Aachoo!' in happy, angry and surprised voices and let students guess the emotion
    • →Use a noun/verb card game: pick a card (paint, fly, plant) and make two sentences
    • →Paint a Newton's disc on a paper plate and spin it with a pencil

    3. Can the student mark the true/false statements from the poem correctly?
    4. Can the student write the VIBGYOR colours in order?
    5. Can the student make one noun sentence and one verb sentence with the same word?
