Chapter 3: Angles as Turns

Introduction

Play "Statue": spin around and freeze when the teacher calls out. How much did you turn? Ashutosh draws a full circle by making a full turn with one foot fixed; Sahana draws a half-moon with a half turn. The minute hand of a clock and a giant wheel also make full turns. This chapter shows that angles arise whenever something turns.

Key Ideas

1. Full, half and quarter turns

  • Two half turns in the same direction = one full turn.
  • Two quarter turns = a half turn.
  • Four quarter turns = a full turn.
  • 2. Naming angles by turns

Pragya joins a green and a yellow straw with a paper clip, holds the green straw still and turns the yellow one:

    Right angle = a quarter (¼) turn
Acute angle = less than a quarter turn
Obtuse angle = more than a quarter turn but less than a half turn
    Straight angle = a half (½) turn

A ¾ turn is more than a straight angle.

    3. Turns in everyday objects

Clothes clips, tongs and scissors open less than a ¼ turn; a door on its hinges opens about a ¼ turn or more; a file cover can open a half turn; taps and wheels can make full turns.

    4. Our own angle-measuring tool

    Fold a tracing-paper circle into 8 equal parts and fix a straw at the centre. A ⅛ turn is half of a quarter turn (acute). Keep turning: 2/8 = ¼, 4/8 = ½, 6/8 = ¾, 8/8 = full turn. Folding a circle into 6 or 12 parts gives ⅙ and 1/12 turns.

    5. Turns on a clock

  • 15 minutes → ¼ turn; 30 minutes → ½ turn; 45 minutes → ¾ turn; 60 minutes → full turn.
  • 1/12 turn → 5 minutes; ⅙ turn → 10 minutes; 4/12 turn → 20 minutes.
  • 6. Clockwise and anti-clockwise

The direction in which clock hands move is clockwise; the opposite is anti-clockwise. Opening a tap, unscrewing a lid or loosening a nut is usually anti-clockwise.

    Worked Examples

  • North + 2 right angles clockwise → a half turn → South.
  • North + 5 right angles clockwise → 4 right angles bring you back to North, 1 more → East.
  • Minute hand turns ⅙ of a full turn → 60 ÷ 6 = 10 minutes.
  • ¼ turn + ⅛ turn = 2/8 + 1/8 = ⅜ turn, which is obtuse (more than ¼, less than ½).
  • Two acute turns together need not be acute: ⅛ + ⅛ = ¼, which is a right angle.
  • Maths Words

  • Angle (कोण)
  • Turn (घुमाव)
  • Right angle (समकोण)
  • Acute angle (न्यूनकोण)
  • Obtuse angle (अधिक कोण)
  • Straight angle (सरल कोण)
  • Clockwise (दक्षिणावर्त)
  • Anti-clockwise (वामावर्त)
  • Maths in Daily Life

Opening doors, turning taps and keys, the hands of a clock, a gymnast's legs, the fan blades and the steering wheel all show turns and angles.

    Common Mistakes

  • Thinking the length of the arms changes the angle — only the amount of turn matters.
  • Mixing up acute and obtuse: compare with a right angle (corner of a notebook).
  • Forgetting the starting point when measuring a turn.
  • Assuming two acute angles always make an acute angle.
  • Practice Tips

  • Always mark the starting position first, then the turn.
  • Use the corner of a book as a quick right-angle checker.
  • For clock questions, remember 60 minutes = 1 full turn and divide.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓An angle is formed whenever something turns
    • ✓A quarter turn is a right angle and a half turn is a straight angle
    • ✓Acute angles are less than a quarter turn; obtuse angles are between a quarter and a half turn
    • ✓Fractions of a turn (⅛, ⅙, 1/12) can be measured with a folded paper circle
    • ✓Clock hands move clockwise; 15 minutes is a ¼ turn of the minute hand

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Play the Statue game and ask children to show their turn with their arms
    • →Let each child join two straws with a paper clip to make acute, right, obtuse and straight angles
    • →Make the paper fan from the book and use it to show different angles
    • →Help children fold tracing-paper circles into 8 and 12 parts to build angle-measuring tools
    • →Use a real clock to link 15, 30 and 45 minutes with ¼, ½ and ¾ turns
    • →Mark North, South, East and West in the classroom and give turning commands
    • →Hunt for angles in the classroom: door, scissors, book corners, clock hands

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child show a right angle, an acute angle and an obtuse angle with straws?
    2. Can the child say what angle a ⅛ turn makes?
    3. Can the child tell how many minutes the minute hand moves in a ⅙ turn?
    4. Can the child find the final direction after 5 right-angle turns clockwise from North?
    5. Can the child classify angles in a shape as acute, right or obtuse?
