Chapter 9: Coconut Farm
Introduction
We visit Susie and Sunitha's coconut farm in Kerala. They harvest coconuts, sell them to customers, pack them in bags, extract coconut oil and sell coconut husk for coir. Ibrahim sells tender coconuts in summer. All these jobs need division — sharing equally and making equal groups. The chapter connects division to multiplication, shows smart mental strategies, and teaches long division using partial quotients and place value.
Key Ideas
1. Division and Multiplication are Connected
An array of 35 coconuts in 5 rows of 7 gives one multiplication fact and two division facts:
5 × 7 = 35 → 35 ÷ 5 = 7 and 35 ÷ 7 = 5
Dividend (N) = Divisor (D) × Quotient (Q)
2. Patterns with 10s and 100s
3. Mental Strategies for Division
4. Long Division with Partial Quotients
582 coconuts shared among 6 customers:
Both are correct; Sunitha's method uses fewer steps.
5. Remainders
Sometimes things do not divide exactly.
N = D × Q + R (Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder)
6. Division Using Place Value
Divide hundreds, then tens, then ones, regrouping when needed.
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Coconut oil: 1 l oil comes from 8 coconuts. From 4,376 coconuts: 4,376 ÷ 8 = 500 + 40 + 7 = 547 l. Sold at ₹175 per litre, they earn 547 × 175 = ₹95,725.
Example 2 — Coconut husk: Husk sells at ₹23 per kg and they earned ₹9,913. Quantity = 9,913 ÷ 23 = 400 + 30 + 1 = 431 kg.
Example 3 — Tender coconuts: Ibrahim earns ₹8,890 selling tender coconuts at ₹35 each. 8,890 ÷ 35 = 254 coconuts. He bought them at ₹20 each (254 × 20 = ₹5,080), so his extra earning is 8,890 − 5,080 = ₹3,810.
Example 4 — Buses: 342 students, 41 per bus. 342 ÷ 41 = 8 remainder 14. The 14 students also need a seat, so 9 buses.
Example 5 — Sharing the picnic cost: ₹157 + ₹124 + ₹136 = ₹417, shared by 3 friends → ₹139 each.

Common Mistakes
Practice Tips
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Every multiplication fact gives two division facts (5 × 7 = 35, so 35 ÷ 5 = 7 and 35 ÷ 7 = 5).
- ✓Mental strategies such as splitting the dividend (1,248 = 1,200 + 48) and repeated halving make division easier.
- ✓Long division can be done by taking away partial quotients; good estimates reduce the number of steps.
- ✓When division is not exact, Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder (N = D × Q + R).
- ✓In word problems we must decide what to do with the remainder, e.g. 535 coconuts in bags of 25 need 22 bags.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Use real objects (bottle caps, seeds) arranged in arrays to show one multiplication and two division facts.
- →Show Susie's and Sunitha's solutions for 582 ÷ 6 side by side and ask which children prefer and why.
- →Practise estimating quotients orally before any written division ('Is 582 ÷ 6 more or less than 100?').
- →Use place-value blocks to act out regrouping in 62 ÷ 5 and 324 ÷ 3, highlighting the 0 in the quotient.
- →Make a 'What happens to the remainder?' chart: extra bus, extra bag, leftover sweets.
- →Role-play Munshi Lal's vegetable shop and let children complete the erased bill using division.
- →Play 'Always, Sometimes, Never' with the chapter's mathematical statements.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child write two division facts for a given multiplication fact?
- Can the child divide 1,248 ÷ 6 or 1,992 ÷ 4 mentally by splitting the number?
- Can the child perform 4,376 ÷ 8 using partial quotients and check the answer?
- Can the child find the remainder and verify N = D × Q + R (e.g. 726 ÷ 4)?
- Can the child interpret the remainder in a word problem, such as the number of buses needed?
