Chapter 3: The Mystery of Food
Introduction
The Forgotten Tiffin Box! On a Monday morning, Disha finds the lunch box she forgot at school on Friday. Her favourite uttapam inside smells bad and has coloured patches. "What happened to my uttapam?" Now Detective Disha sets out to solve the mysteries of food, writing each Finding in her notebook. Her Anna (elder brother in Tamil) Aditya, who is in Grade 8, helps her. This is the first chapter of Unit 2: Health and Well-being.
What We Learn
Mystery #1: What made my uttapam spoil?
The patches are mould, a colony of thousands of microbes. Microbes are living things so tiny that we need a microscope to see them. They are found in soil, water, air, plants, animals and inside us. Some microbes spoil food, but others help us make curd and digest food.
Mystery #2: Why do some foods spoil faster?
Bread left on the balcony for two days got mouldy, but Paati's (grandmother's) mango pickle made two months ago was still good, because it was covered with oil.
Finding: Microbes need moisture, air and the right temperature to grow. Remove any one and they stop.
Mystery #3: How do we save food from spoiling?
Disha finds food preservation methods at home:
Good microbes
My Food, My Pride
Chew Right!
Final discovery: Some microbes spoil food, while others help us make food and digest it. Eat right, preserve and store right, chew well, and thank the good microbes!

Common Mix-ups
Let Us Reflect (Hints)
For a two-day trip, carry dry or preserved foods (khakhra, dry fruits, laddoos) in air-tight boxes and keep them cool and dry.
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Food spoils because of microbes, tiny living things seen only with a microscope, and mould is a visible colony of them
- ✓Microbes need moisture, air and the right temperature, so removing any one stops spoilage
- ✓Traditional and modern preservation includes drying, pickling with oil, salt, sugar, spices, refrigeration, ghee-making and air-tight packing
- ✓Good microbes help make curd and idli batter and help digestion
- ✓Chewing properly with incisors, canines, premolars and molars, plus oral hygiene and small bites, keeps us healthy and safe from choking
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Have each student keep a 'Food Detective' notebook and write Findings #1 to #13 as the class solves each mystery
- →Leave a slice of bread in a closed moist box and a dry one open, and compare mould over a week (observe without touching)
- →Dry tomato slices on the classroom window and weigh them before and after to show lost water
- →Invite the school cook or an elder to show a local pickle or drying tradition
- →Use a mirror and a snack to identify incisors, canines, premolars and molars while chewing
- →Hold a seasonal fruit calendar activity for your region, for example amla in winter and jamun in summer
- →Practise safe eating habits: small bites and no talking with food in the mouth, as the teacher's note advises
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain what mould is and why the uttapam spoiled?
- Can the student name the three things microbes need to grow?
- Can the student match a food to its preservation method and product, such as chillies to chilli powder by drying?
- Can the student give two examples of good microbes helping us?
- Can the student name the four types of teeth and the job of each?
