Chapter 9: Rhythms of Nature
Introduction
Friends Saba and Aparna meet after a long time. "You are taller than me! And your hair is short now," says Saba. Aparna laughs – Saba has started learning the guitar! They talk about their old classroom and the new trees planted near the school gate. So much has changed since last year.
Changes are happening to us and to the world around us all the time. Some take years, some take days, and some happen in minutes!
This chapter helps us notice the patterns of change in nature – day and night, and the seasons.
What We Learn
1. Changes big and small
2. Day and night
The Sun stays in one place; it is the Earth that rotates. This causes day and night.
3. Seasons' journal and chart
4. Discovering seasons
The weather warms up, gets hot, then it rains, then it cools, and then it warms up again – every year. This repeating pattern is what we call seasons.
In India we have six seasons (ritus):
Seasons differ across India: winter in Kerala is not like winter in Kashmir, and the monsoon in Assam is different from Rajasthan. India has both one of the wettest places on Earth (Mawsynram, Meghalaya) and one of the driest (the Thar Desert).
5. Celebrating seasons
- Pongal / Makar Sankranti – winter
- Holi – spring, when flowers bloom
- Diwali – autumn, after crops are harvested
- Baisakhi, Gudi Padwa, Vishu, Rongali Bihu – new year and harvest festivals
Seasons give rhythm to our lives and remind us that change is natural and necessary.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Changes happen all the time – some over years, some every year, some in minutes.
- ✓Day and night happen because the Earth rotates; the Sun only seems to move from east to west.
- ✓Oceans and seas cover about three-fourth of the Earth; seas are smaller and partly enclosed by land.
- ✓Seasons are a repeating yearly pattern; India traditionally has six: Vasanta, Grishma, Varsha, Sharad, Hemant, Shishir.
- ✓Seasons shape crops, food, clothes and festivals, and they differ across regions of India.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Begin with the Grade 3–4–5 change table so students notice changes in themselves first.
- →Play the Sun–Earth rotation game in the playground before the globe and torch demo.
- →Darken the room for the torch-and-globe demonstration and mark India with a sticker.
- →Start the Seasons' Journal early in the year; take students to the same spot each term.
- →Build the classroom Seasons' Chart together and let groups present posters.
- →Ask students to collect local season names and seasonal songs from family.
- →Use a festival–season matching game to close the lesson.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student explain, using a globe and torch, why day and night happen?
- Can the student name the six Indian seasons with their English names?
- Can the student give an example of a change that takes years, one that repeats every year and one that takes minutes?
- Can the student match Pongal, Holi, Diwali and Baisakhi to their seasons?
