Chapter 10: Songwriting (Music)

Introduction

The objective of this chapter is to build your own unique style of expressing thoughts and ideas to an audience through lyric writing. Many people like to sing existing songs, but others love creating their own.

Songwriting tip: think of writing as collaboration, not competition, and be constructive and positive when giving feedback.

Key Ideas

Descriptive writing

Descriptive writing means describing an object, place, experience or thing in detail so the reader can clearly picture it. The book's tips:

  • Describe the object of your song in depth so listeners can picture it.
  • Use all your senses — how it looks, smells, feels and so on.
  • Use your imagination to describe something unfamiliar.
  • Share your writing and be open to feedback.
  • Read other people's writing to learn new perspectives.
  • Writing lyrics for a familiar melody

The melody of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is the same as Baa Baa Black Sheep and the alphabet song A B C D. You can write your own words to this well-known tune.

    Nottuswaram

Nottuswaram is a set of Carnatic compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar. The word combines the English 'note' and the Tamil 'swaram'. Most are based on Western melodies; Dikshitar composed 39 nottuswarams. Shyamale Meenakshi is one — students can write new words for it.

    Learning to rhyme

Rhyme is important in songs because it helps our ears know where a line changes and highlights the idea of the song. People listen carefully when words rhyme. Examples: cat, bat, mat; love, above; hand, understand.

    The Solar System Song

A fun song in which each planet introduces itself in rhyming lines — for example, "I'm Mercury, the smallest, I'm closest to the Sun / I take eighty-eight days to complete my yearly run." The chorus repeats: "The planets, the planets, revolve around the Sun…"

    Activities

  • Try it yourself — write descriptively about a tree.
  • Write a song on a familiar melody — new lyrics for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Shyamale Meenakshi.
  • Write a song on an unfamiliar melody — listen to a new melody or a nottuswaram and write lyrics.
  • Listen to the rhyme in the Solar System Song.
  • Fill in the next verse following the rhyme scheme:
  • > The sky was dark in the morning, / The sun didn't shine as bright. / The day is set for mourning, / I miss the warmth of the light.

Here morning–mourning and bright–light rhyme in alternate lines.
