Chapter 13: Breaking Barriers with Dance (Dance)
Introduction
Chapter 13, Breaking Barriers with Dance, shows that in dance a character can be played by any dancer, irrespective of their gender. In many traditional performances, men often play women's characters. The chapter explores how dance has moved beyond gender limits and how it connects with rhythm and even mathematics.
Key Ideas
1. The Bhakti movement and dance
2. The Gotipua dance
The Gotipua dance originated in Odisha.
The Maharis danced inside the temple in praise of Lord Jagannatha, while the Gotipuas — young boys — danced for the public. The boys dress up as girls and perform dances with acrobatic movements.
3. The Ardhanareeshwara
The book shows a painting of Ardhanareeshwara — Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi shown on a single face with dance make-up. It is a powerful image of male and female together in one dancer.
4. Loka nritya and changing gender roles
Mohiniyattam was earlier performed only by women, while Kathakali and Yakshagana were earlier performed only by men. In modern times these forms have undergone a drastic transformation by removing gender constraints. Stances and gaits in dance are not strictly limited by gender, and dancers often blend styles to create their own expression. The book says Lavani and Bhangra can be practised by both girls and boys.
5. Jogati Manjamma
Jogati Manjamma is a path-breaking personality who influenced the development of the Jogati dance in Karnataka by breaking the barriers of gender identity. The project asks you to find out about her childhood, learning, achievements and associations.
6. Dance, shapes and tala
Mathematics and dance complement each other.
Dancers form triangles, circles, squares and rectangles with their hands, arms and legs, and use geometric patterns for group formations. Rhythm and beat are simply arithmetical patterns, and talas are different permutations and combinations of rhythmic units. The book's examples:
