Chapter 14: Harmony in Motion (Dance)

Introduction

Chapter 14, Harmony in Motion, celebrates India's rich tapestry of traditional dances, each rooted in our diverse cultural heritage. These dances are not merely movement; they also convey stories, emotions and spirituality.

A traditional dance may be shastriya nritya (classical dance) or loka nritya (folk dance).

India has many instruments, props, costumes, languages and beliefs, and traditional dances uplift our nation and strengthen social and moral values. The chapter reminds you that it is your responsibility to preserve and protect our cultural heritage of dance.

Key Ideas

1. Dance with regional instruments

  • Bihu of Assam uses the dhol and a unique wind instrument made of buffalo horn called pepa.
  • Sidi Dhamal dance from Gujarat uses big drums during performance.
  • 2. More than movement

All dances in India are rooted in cultural heritage. A dance consists not only of movement, rhythm and music but also costume, prop, make-up and stage position. Before performing, think about:

  • Which props you will use (pots, sticks, rings…)
  • What costumes suit the dance
  • Dance jewellery such as a necklace, head dress, earrings, ghungroo, a Hanuman face mask or a queen's crown
  • 3. Stagecraft for dancers

    The class discusses:

  • Placing props on stage without distracting the performance
  • Designing costumes that are comfortable for lifting hands and legs, jumping and flipping
  • Entry and exit from the stage through two sides (the stage structure is shown in the theatre section)
  • 4. Dance drama (Natya)

Dance drama or natya is a form of creative expression where participants use dance to tell a story or convey a message using steps, body and hastamudras, often with songs and music.

Dance drama needs coordination, expression and collaboration among performers. It can be inspired by themes, cultures or historical events.

    5. Writing a script

A script is a written document containing dialogues, songs, action and direction for the performance of a dance drama.

In dance, dialogue is mostly through hastamudras, though words can also be used. While writing, think of characters, costumes, props and stage needs, and use rhythm syllables (bols or collukettus, e.g. tha ka dhi mi) and sargams from music class.

    6. From choreography to performance

After choreographing the natya with dialogues, music, beats and movements, practise with props, then rehearse on stage. The book's message: "Practice! Practice! Practice! The key element of success is practice." Finally, perform your natya for your class or a large audience.

    Activities in the Chapter

  • Activity 1: Choose a traditional dance of your region and its song; dance with regional instruments.
  • Activity 2: Make dance jewellery and props from cardboard, coloured paper and ribbons.
  • Activity 3: Draw and make a jewellery item or prop of your choice.
  • Activity 5: Choose a story about nature, the environment or the freedom movement (e.g. avoiding plastic, saving water bodies, excessive mobile use, organic farming, equality in education), write a script and perform a natya.
  • Key Terms

  • Shastriya nritya – classical dance (शास्त्रीय नृत्य)
  • Loka nritya – folk dance (लोक नृत्य)
  • Pepa – buffalo-horn wind instrument of Assam (पेपा)
  • Dhol – drum (ढोल)
  • Prop – object used in performance (रंगमंच सामग्री)
  • Costume – performance clothing (वेशभूषा)
  • Ghungroo – ankle bells (घुँघरू)
  • Natya – dance drama (नाट्य)
  • Script – written plan of dialogues, songs, action and direction (पटकथा)
  • Bols / collukettus – rhythm syllables (बोल)
  • Rehearsal – practice on stage before the show (पूर्वाभ्यास)
  • Collaboration – working together (सहयोग)
  • Connect to Your Life

Think of a festival in your area. Which dance, instruments and costumes are part of it? You are part of keeping that heritage alive!

    Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting that costumes must let you move freely.
  • Placing props where they block other dancers or distract the audience.
  • Writing a natya script with only spoken lines — in dance, hastamudras carry most of the dialogue.
  • Let's Reflect

  • Which story would you choose for your class natya, and why?
  • What props and jewellery would your character need?
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Traditional dance may be shastriya nritya (classical) or loka nritya (folk), and it conveys stories, emotions and spirituality.
    • ✓Regional dances use their own instruments, like the dhol and buffalo-horn pepa in Assam's Bihu.
    • ✓A dance includes costume, props, make-up and stage position as well as movement, rhythm and music.
    • ✓Dance drama (natya) tells a story through steps, body and hastamudras and needs coordination, expression and collaboration.
    • ✓A script holds dialogues, songs, action and direction; practice and rehearsal lead to a successful performance.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Ask students to bring a song and describe a dance from their own region for Activity 1.
    • →Play clips of Bihu and Sidi Dhamal and let students identify the pepa, dhol and big drums.
    • →Set up a craft station with cardboard, coloured paper and ribbons for making jewellery and props.
    • →Draw a simple stage on the board and mark the two entry and exit sides.
    • →Help groups choose a social-message story from the book's list and write a short script with hastamudra dialogue.
    • →Schedule practice, prop handling and a stage rehearsal before the final natya performance.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student explain the difference between shastriya nritya and loka nritya?
    2. Can the student name the instruments used in Bihu and Sidi Dhamal?
    3. Can the student list the elements of a dance beyond movement (costume, prop, make-up, stage position)?
    4. Can the student define natya and describe what a script contains?
    5. Does the student take part in making props and performing the natya?
