Chapter 20: The Grand Finale (Theatre)

Introduction

The Grand Finale is a fun project that puts together everything you learnt in theatre — emotions (Chapter 16), design and scripts (Chapter 17) and puppetry (Chapter 19). You can do it individually or in a group with friends.

Key Ideas — the four steps

1. Script

Pick an emotion → select characters → create a story → write dialogues.

Write a simple conversation between two or three characters based on one emotion, making sure that emotion runs through the conversation. Example: if the emotion is anger, the main character could be short-tempered, or two friends could discuss how someone's anger causes problems.

2. Make-up and costume

Design make-up and costumes for the characters in your script, just as you did in Chapter 17.

3. Stage design

Use your cardboard stage model to plan the set and props. Then plan your final performance in class: set up the stage and act out the script with friends.

4. Switch to puppetry

Don't want to act? Cut out the outline of each costume-design picture and paste a stick on one end — your stick puppets are ready. Use the same stage model as your puppet frame!

Discussion and Feedback

After presenting or performing, discuss each part of the work in detail — this is very important for every artist:

  • Script — Did the audience understand the story? Were the conflict and resolution clear?
  • Costume and make-up — Were they neat? Did they add to the character or disturb the performance?
  • Stage — Were the design and props well used?
  • Overall — What could have made the show better?
  • Take both positive and negative feedback with the same attitude — it helps you improve, so you won't repeat the same mistakes.

    Looking Ahead

You have just learnt the basic steps of how a theatrical performance takes shape. Next, you will learn more detailed steps to make scripts and performances look professional. Keep creating scripts and small shows — from a story you read, a film you watched or your own imagination.

As the Natyashastra verse at the start of the Theatre section says, theatre not only teaches the performing arts but also builds the life skills you will need. There is no wrong answer — try new ideas confidently and have fun!

    Key Terms

  • Finale — the final part or show (समापन)
  • Script — written dialogue for a play (पटकथा)
  • Props — objects used on stage (मंच सामग्री)
  • Stage model — cardboard model of a stage (मंच का मॉडल)
  • Feedback — comments to help improve (प्रतिक्रिया)
  • Rehearsal — practice before the show (पूर्वाभ्यास)
  • Resolution — how the conflict is solved (समाधान)
  • Stick puppet — cut-out on a stick (छड़ कठपुतली)
  • Audience — people who watch (दर्शक)
  • Life skills — skills useful in life, such as teamwork and confidence (जीवन कौशल)
  • Connect to Your Life

Put on a short show for your family at home using a story you know — and ask them for feedback.

    Common Mistakes

  • Mixing many emotions so the chosen emotion gets lost.
  • Forgetting a clear conflict and resolution in the script.
  • Make-up or costumes that distract from the character.
  • Taking negative feedback personally instead of using it to improve.
  • Let's Reflect

  • Which emotion did your script show, and did the audience feel it?
  • How can one stage model be used both for a play and a puppet show?
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓The Grand Finale combines emotions, script-writing, make-up, costume, stage design and puppetry into one project
    • ✓The script is built by picking one emotion, selecting characters, creating a story and writing dialogues
    • ✓Costume designs can be cut out and put on sticks to switch the play into a puppet show using the same stage model
    • ✓Feedback is discussed under script, costume and make-up, stage, and overall show
    • ✓Positive and negative feedback should both be accepted to improve next time

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Let students choose to work alone or in groups
    • →Give each group one emotion chit to keep the script focused
    • →Keep the cardboard stage models from Chapter 17 for this project
    • →Show how a costume drawing becomes a stick puppet in two minutes
    • →Use the book's four feedback questions as a class checklist after each show
    • →Model how to give kind but honest feedback before students give theirs

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Does the script clearly show one chosen emotion?
    2. Are make-up and costume designs suited to the characters?
    3. Is the stage model used well for set and props (or as a puppet frame)?
    4. Does the student give and receive feedback constructively?
