Chapter 22: Assessment (Assessment)
Introduction
How is art "tested"? Not with question papers! Assessment in art education helps you and your teachers understand your creative abilities and artistic growth. It looks at a wide range of skills — creativity, critical thinking, technical skill and expression — and encourages exploration, self-expression and a deeper love of the arts.
Key Ideas
Methods of assessment
The 5-point scale
Every criterion is marked on a 5-point scale:
Formative assessment (every class)
Your teacher observes you in every class. Criteria in all four art forms are grouped under the same curricular goals:
There is a mid-term and an end-term formative aggregate in each art form. The tables also have columns for the teacher and for self-assessment.
Examples of what is checked:
Summative assessment (one whole day)
One whole day is set aside. Space, materials, tools and instruments are prepared, and you create something on the spot, individually and in groups of 3–4.
Report
The mid-term and end-term scores combine formative and summative scores for each art form, along with the teacher's comments on your strengths and areas of improvement.
Building Your Portfolio
A portfolio is a collection of your work over the year. Keep your drawings, prints and seals, songs you wrote, dance notes, scripts, mask and puppet photos, and your Circle Time reflections. Date each piece and add a line about what you learnt — it shows your artistic journey.
Key Terms
Connect to Your Life
Assess one of your own artworks on the 5-point scale for "imagination and creativity" and write one strength and one area to improve.
