Unit 1: Importance of Physical Education and Well-being

Introduction

This first unit of Khel Yatra shows how regular physical activity makes us feel good and helps us get along with others. It is built around six games, many of them traditional Indian games, which the book says are "best to inculcate different values and cultural understanding" and also keep a player fit and alert.

The unit has three aims:

  • Games and Fun Activities – play lots of games and hold interesting discussions.
  • Looking after each other – stay together, grow together and be happy for each other, becoming happier, physically and mentally stronger and more successful.
  • Safety First – stay safe while playing, avoid injuries and create a healthy environment for everyone.
  • Key Ideas

    The shape of every session

Each game in this unit (IPE-1 to IPE-6) follows the same four-part plan:

  • Warm-up – exercises to prepare the body (for example torso twist, squat, side walk, shoulder circles).
  • Activity – the main game.
  • Cool-down – gentle stretches (for example floor touch, calf stretch, hamstring stretch, Pashchimottanasana).
  • Circle Time – the class sits together and talks about a value learnt through the game.
  • Circle Time turns every game into a lesson about how we treat each other.

The six games and their values

IPE-1 Ice Water – Being Together

  • A traditional game of togetherness: you rescue teammates and support each other.
  • A "Denner" chases the other players.
  • A player tagged "ice" must freeze (stand still) on the spot.
  • Another player unfreezes them by touching them and saying "water".
  • The game goes on until all players are frozen or time is over.
  • A player tagged "ice" more than three times becomes the Denner.
  • Circle Time: how would you feel if you were not allowed to play for the next 7 days, and why?
  • Playing together makes you feel good and gives you joy.

IPE-2 Seven Stones – Growing Happily

  • A local game played across India under different names: Satolia, Lagori, Pitthu, Norgoloi, etc. It combines agility, strategy and teamwork.
  • Make two teams. Pile the stones and mark a line about 15 feet from the stack.
  • The first team sends a player to strike the stack, with three chances.
  • A fielder stands on the other side of the stack; if they catch the ball directly thrown by the striker, the striker is out.
  • After the strike, the striking team runs to rebuild the stack and shouts the game's name (lagori, satolia, pitthu…).
  • A player hit by the ball thrown by the fielding team is out.
  • If the team shouts before all the stones are stacked, the whole team is out.
  • If they restack and shout before anyone is out, they get one point.
  • Circle Time: list what you liked most and what you did not enjoy.
  • Playing helps you to be active and stress free.

IPE-3 Aerobic Exercises – Growing Strong

  • Aerobic exercises increase heart rate and breathing for long periods.
  • They combine rhythmic dance moves with energetic music. The workout needs oxygen over extended periods, which promotes heart health, endurance and general fitness.
  • Circle Time: write how regular aerobic exercise reduces panting.
  • Bones and muscles grow stronger if you exercise regularly and eat healthy food.

IPE-4 Follow Me – Helping each other

  • A mimicking game: make a mirror image of someone's movement.
  • One member demonstrates a movement (animal walks, body rolls, jumps, stretches, balancing on one leg) and the others copy it.
  • Switch the leader after a set time so everyone gets a turn.
  • Circle Time: share a time you helped someone even when it was inconvenient.
  • Playing together builds an emotional and social bond; you share values like fair play, following rules and respecting each other's performances.

IPE-5 Number Game – Treating each other well

  • Adapted from the local game Rumaal Jhapata.
  • Form a circle and make two teams; put a cone or marker in the centre.
  • Players in both teams get the same numbers (for example 1 to 10 in Team A and 1 to 10 in Team B).
  • Everyone moves around the circle as the teacher says (jogging clockwise, anti-clockwise, frog jump).
  • The teacher calls a number; the two players with that number race to the marker, and whoever touches it first gets one point.
  • Circle Time: what would you do if someone was being treated badly during play?
  • Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

IPE-6 Hula Hoop Jump – Learn to be happy for each other

  • Make teams, each in a lane with one hula hoop.
  • The hoop is placed in front of you; jump inside it with both legs, lift it, place it ahead and jump again, landing with both feet together.
  • Repeat to the end point, run back and pass the hoop to your teammate. The first team to finish wins.
  • Circle Time: imagine everyone cheering your win and describe your reaction as a poem; have you ever appreciated the other team?
  • Appreciate the effort and not the outcome of the game.

    Activities & Drills

  • Play each game with its warm-up and cool-down, exactly in the order Warm-up → Activity → Cool-down → Circle Time.
  • Explore different aerobic exercise combinations with your teacher.
  • Try Follow Me with new movements: animal walks, body rolls and one-leg balances.
  • Safety First

  • Always warm up before and cool down after a game.
  • In tag games like Ice Water, tag gently and watch where you run.
  • In Seven Stones, stay behind the line and never throw the ball at anyone's head.
  • Keep the play area clear so everyone stays safe and the environment stays healthy.
  • Key Terms

  • Physical Education – learning through physical activity and games (शारीरिक शिक्षा)
  • Well-being – feeling healthy, happy and comfortable (कल्याण / स्वास्थ्य)
  • Warm-up – exercises that prepare the body for activity (वार्म-अप)
  • Cool-down – gentle exercises that bring the body back to rest (कूल-डाउन)
  • Circle Time – group discussion after a game (चर्चा समय)
  • Denner – the chaser in Ice Water (पकड़ने वाला)
  • Agility – the ability to move and change direction quickly (फुर्ती)
  • Aerobic exercise – rhythmic exercise that uses oxygen for a long time (एरोबिक व्यायाम)
  • Endurance – being able to keep going for a long time (सहनशक्ति)
  • Teamwork – working together towards one goal (टीम भावना)
  • Fair play – playing honestly and by the rules (खेल भावना)
  • Mimic – to copy someone's movements (नकल करना)
  • Fun Facts / Indian Connections

  • Seven Stones is the same game known as Satolia, Lagori, Pitthu and Norgoloi in different parts of India.
  • The Number Game comes from the local game Rumaal Jhapata.
  • The cool-down in Seven Stones uses the yoga posture Pashchimottanasana.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Skipping the warm-up and going straight into the game.
  • In Seven Stones, shouting the game's name before all stones are restacked — that puts the whole team out.
  • In Hula Hoop Jump, landing on one foot instead of both feet together.
  • Thinking only winning matters: the book asks you to appreciate effort, not outcome.
  • Check Yourself

  • Explain the four-part structure of each session.
  • Describe how a frozen player is released in Ice Water.
  • Give three regional names for Seven Stones.
  • Say which game builds heart health and why.
  • Answer each Circle Time question in two or three sentences from your own experience.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Run each game with its listed warm-up and cool-down so students learn the four-part routine.
    • →Ask students what Seven Stones is called in their area and add local names to the board.
    • →Play energetic music for aerobic exercises and let groups invent their own combinations.
    • →Keep Circle Time short and focused on the one value listed for that game.
    • →Rotate the Denner in Ice Water and the leader in Follow Me so every child gets a turn.
    • →In Hula Hoop Jump, praise good technique and effort, not only the winning team.
    • →Point out distress signs and make sure every child knows how to report an injury.
