Unit 4: Fundamental Skills of Handball

Introduction

Handball is a fast-paced invasive team sport played with a ball. Players pass, dribble and shoot to score; defenders intercept passes and block shots.

In this unit we will:

  • Learn and Play – learn handball through interactive games and exercises.
  • Better coordination, strength and endurance – handball improves all three.
  • Team spirit – work together, involve everyone and support each other.
  • Key Ideas — the 13 sessions (FSB-1 to FSB-13)

    FSB-1 Passing

  • Stance: feet shoulder-width apart; the non-throwing arm is often extended for balance and to protect the ball.
  • Grip: ball in one hand, slightly above the head, fingers spread around it.
  • Target: aim the pass at your teammate's torso.
  • Execution: bring the throwing arm back behind the head with the elbow bent at 90 degrees; stretch the arm up and forward and release at the highest point, snapping the wrist forward for accuracy.
  • Follow-through: the arm moves forward and down, the hand pointing at the target.
  • Lead-up Monkey in the Middle: a "monkey" inside the circle tries to intercept; whoever makes the unsuccessful pass becomes the new monkey.
  • FSB-2 Catching

  • Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, leaning slightly forward.
  • Hands in front of the torso with fingers spread wide, elbows slightly bent, eyes on the ball.
  • Catch with a loose wrist, firm fingers and the pad of the palm.
  • Follow-through: step towards the ball, bend the elbows and bring the ball back towards the body to absorb its force and stop it bouncing out.
  • Lead-up Say and Catch: call a player's name as you throw; whoever drops the ball is out.
  • FSB-3 10-pass

  • The team with the ball tries to complete ten consecutive passes while the other team tries to intercept. If the ball is intercepted or dropped, possession changes.
  • Lead-up Pass and Chase: two lines running in parallel at least 5 metres apart, passing across.
  • FSB-4 Dribbling

  • Control the ball with fingertips, not the palm; fingers spread, wrist and forearm in line, hand on top of the ball.
  • Knees bent, body low, head up and back straight to see the court.
  • Keep the dribble low, generally below waist level, so defenders find it hard to steal.
  • Practise with both hands; take longer strides for distance without losing control.
  • FSB-5 Obstacle Dribbling

  • Dribble through cones set in zig-zags, loops and sudden turns with few or no fumbles in the shortest time.
  • Lead-up Sadhu and Shaitan: four dribbling players (sadhu) relay the ball between cones about 4 metres apart, while two players (shaitan) try to block it.
  • FSB-6 Shoot the Ball (jump shot)

  • Grip firmly with fingers spread; feet shoulder-width apart, body sideways with the non-throwing shoulder towards the target; bend the knees and prepare for a high jump.
  • Raise the throwing arm with the shoulder at roughly 90° behind the head; point at the target with the non-throwing arm.
  • At the peak of the jump, release the ball forcefully downward towards the goal, in front of your forehead; follow through with your arm.
  • Lead-up Blindfolded Shooter: an instructor guides a blindfolded shooter by voice; switch after five goals.
  • Did you know? Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their feet.

    FSB-7 Dodge Ball

  • One team forms a circle and tags players inside with a soft ball, aiming only below the waist with overhead throws.
  • FSB-8 Dribble and Shoot

  • Dribble along a path towards goal, pick the best shooting technique, then return.
  • Lead-up Shark Tank: "minnows" dribble across the court while "sharks" try to steal the ball.
  • Did you know? Players may not pull, hit or punch the ball out of an opponent's hands.

    FSB-9 Pass and Shoot

  • Five players stand on a semicircle of radius 9 metres from the goalpost and decide whether to shoot or pass to a teammate with a better angle.
  • The importance of 3 in handball: a player can run with the ball for a maximum of three steps and hold the ball for up to 3 seconds.

    FSB-10 Shootout Tournament

  • Teams take turns shooting past the goalkeeper; each goal earns one point.
  • Lead-up Hit the Target: three to five throws per round aimed at the goal corners.
  • FSB-11 Goalkeeper's Defensive Skills

  • Stand at the centre of the goal, feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms up, fingers spread.
  • Read the shooter's body language and arm; move laterally with short, rapid steps, ready to dive or leap.
  • After blocking, absorb the force, secure the ball or divert it away from goal.
  • Lead-up Battle of Balloons: two poles 2 metres high, 3 metres apart, with balloons at top and bottom (RT, RB, LT, LB); students start 6 metres away and get ten chances.
  • FSB-12 Blocking

  • Always position yourself between the goal and your opponent.
  • Raise both arms to divert the ball and block the shooter's view; time your jump with the release; use your body (not fouls) to block the route.
  • Lead-up Rapid Fire: a defender blocks rapid shots for 1–2 minutes.
  • Did you know? Officials use 17 hand signals to communicate decisions.

    FSB-13 Assimilation

  • Small-sided games using all the skills learnt; the winning team stays on to become "King of the Court".
  • Safety First

  • Warm up and cool down every session.
  • In Dodge Ball, aim only below the waist.
  • Never pull, hit or punch the ball from an opponent's hands; block with your body position, not by fouling.
  • Goalkeepers should practise diving on safe surfaces.
  • Key Terms

  • Invasive sport – teams enter each other's area to score (आक्रमणकारी खेल)
  • Passing – throwing the ball to a teammate (पास देना)
  • Catching – receiving the ball safely (कैच करना)
  • Dribbling – bouncing the ball while moving (ड्रिबलिंग)
  • Jump shot – shooting at the peak of a jump (जंप शॉट)
  • Follow-through – continuing the movement after release (फॉलो-थ्रू)
  • Interception – stealing a pass (बीच में रोकना)
  • Blocking – stopping a shot or pass (रोकना / ब्लॉक करना)
  • Goalkeeper – player who guards the goal (गोलरक्षक)
  • Torso – the trunk of the body (धड़)
  • Possession – control of the ball (कब्ज़ा)
  • Foul – breaking a rule (नियम भंग)
  • Fun Facts

  • Rule of 3: maximum three steps with the ball and 3 seconds holding it.
  • Officials have 17 hand signals.
  • The shooting semicircle used in FSB-9 has a 9-metre radius.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Dribbling with the palm instead of the fingertips, or bouncing the ball too high.
  • Releasing the pass or shot too early instead of at the highest point / peak of the jump.
  • Stiff wrists while catching, so the ball bounces out.
  • Taking more than three steps or holding the ball longer than 3 seconds.
  • Touching the ball with the feet.
  • Check Yourself

  • Describe the grip, execution and follow-through of a pass.
  • How do you absorb the ball's force when catching?
  • State the "rule of 3".
  • How should a goalkeeper stand and move?
  • Why should a defender stand between the goal and the opponent?
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Handball is a fast-paced invasive team sport of passing, dribbling, shooting, intercepting and blocking.
    • ✓Pass with the elbow bent at 90°, release at the highest point and follow through towards the target.
