Chapter 7: India’s Cultural Roots
The Big Questions
"That which cannot be stolen; that which cannot be confiscated by rulers; … that which, though it is used, only grows every day — that is the greatest wealth of all, the wealth of true knowledge." — Subhāṣhita (Wise Saying)
Introduction
Indian culture is several millenniums old. The chapter compares it to an ancient tree: many roots nurture one common trunk, and from the trunk grow many branches — art, literature, science, medicine, governance, martial arts and different schools of thought (groups of thinkers who share similar ideas about life and the world). Some roots go back to the Harappan civilisation.
Key Concepts
1. The Vedas
ekam sat viprā bahudhā vadanti — "The Existent is one, but sages give it many names."
"United be your purpose, united your heart… may your thoughts be united, so all may agree!" — last mantras of the Rig Veda
2. Vedic society
3. Vedic schools of thought
Upanishad stories about asking questions:
4. Buddhism
"Not by water is one made pure, though many people may bathe here… Conquering oneself is greater than conquering a thousand men on the battlefield a thousand times." — the Buddha
5. Jainism
6. Schools of thought, not just 'religions'
The book prefers 'schools of thought' or 'belief systems', since they have philosophical, spiritual, religious, ethical and social aspects. There were others too, such as the Chārvāka (Lokāyata) school, which held that only the material world exists; it faded away. All the main schools shared dharma, karma, rebirth and the search to end suffering and ignorance — the 'trunk' of the tree.
7. Folk and tribal roots

"May all creatures be happy", ahiṁsā, anekāntavāda (respecting other views) and aparigraha (not over-consuming) are still useful for living together and caring for nature. The banyan tree — sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains — remains a fine symbol of Indian civilisation.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓The four Vedas are India's oldest texts, passed on orally; their message includes truth/order (ṛitam) and the unity behind many names (ekam sat).
- ✓The Upanishads and Vedānta introduced karma, rebirth, brahman and ātman — 'tat tvam asi', 'sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ'.
- ✓The Buddha taught that ignorance and attachment cause suffering, and stressed ahiṁsā and inner discipline.
- ✓Mahāvīra's Jainism teaches ahiṁsā, anekāntavāda and aparigraha, and the interdependence of all creatures.
- ✓Folk and tribal traditions and the major schools of thought have enriched each other for millenniums.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Draw the 'tree of Indian culture' on the board — roots, trunk (shared ideas) and branches — and fill it in as the chapter proceeds.
- →Dramatise the three Upanishad stories (Shvetaketu, Nachiketa, Gārgī) to show that asking questions is valued.
- →Open a banyan fruit or show a picture of its seeds to explain Uddālaka's lesson to Shvetaketu.
- →Discuss the Buddha's saying 'Conquering oneself…' and ask students for examples of self-control in daily life.
- →Use a simple object seen from different sides (a box, a pencil) to explain anekāntavāda.
- →Let students list local deities and festivals and discuss which have folk or tribal roots.
- →Run the chapter's True/False exercise as a quick quiz game at the end.
