Chapter 8: Unity in Diversity, or ‘Many in the One’
The Big Questions
"Oh, grant me my prayer, that I may never lose the bliss of the touch of the one in the play of the many." — Rabindranath Tagore
"…the Many in the One, would place her on the sure foundation of her Swabhava and Swadharma." — Sri Aurobindo
Introduction
Travel across India by train and you will see changing landscapes, dresses and foods, hear many languages and see many scripts. This rich diversity is often the first thing that strikes visitors. But beneath it lies a deep unity — the 'Many in the One'. This chapter explores that unity through food, clothing, festivals and literature.
Key Concepts
1. A rich diversity
2. Food for all
3. Textiles and clothing
4. Festivals galore
Many festivals are celebrated across India at about the same time under different names. Makara Sankranti, around January 14, marks the start of the harvest season. On the map it appears as Maghi/Lohri, Khichdi Parv, Makar Sankraat, Poush Sankranti, Pedda Panduga, Sankramana, Makaravilakku, Shishur Saenkraat and more — one festival, many names.
5. An epic spread
- Mahabharata: the Pandavas, with Krishna's help, fight their cousins the Kauravas.
- Ramayana: Rama, with Lakshmana and Hanuman, defeats Ravana, who had kidnapped Sita.
6. The underlying unity
Indian culture celebrates diversity as an enrichment but never loses sight of the unity that nourishes it — diversity does not divide, it enriches.

Look at your own tiffin, your family's clothes and your festivals: which ingredients, garments or dates do you share with people in other states? The class survey of birthplaces and mother tongues shows diversity even inside one classroom.

- →Invite students to bring or show pictures of saris and dhotis and demonstrate different draping styles.

- →Read aloud a Pañchatantra story and ask if a similar story exists in their language or region.
- →Identify the episode in Sahibdin's Yuddha Kāṇḍa painting as a class discussion.
