Chapter 9: Family and Community
The Big Questions
"Love and dharma are the flower and fruit of family life." — Tiruvalluvar
Introduction
Almost all of us live in a family. The family is the fundamental and most ancient unit of any society. Families are connected to other families and people around them, forming communities. This chapter (in the theme Governance and Democracy) explores how families and communities work, what roles people play, and why everyone depends on each other.
Key Concepts
1. Types of families
2. Words for relatives
3. Roles and responsibilities
4. Two family stories
Shalini (Kerala): Shalini lives with her parents, younger brother, Acchamma (father's mother), Chittappa (father's brother), Chitti (aunt) and cousin Chinni. Before Onam, Chittappa lost his job. Shalini's parents bought new clothes for everyone, so Shalini got a simple cotton dress instead of the silk one she wanted. Acchamma explained that families support each other and share what they have — and Shalini was happy everyone got new clothes.
Tenzing (Meghalaya): Tenzing's father runs a small grocery store. When his mother got busy in a handicraft cooperative, his father began sharing the housework — cleaning, the vegetable garden and helping Grandmother cook. Grandmother tells stories full of humour and wisdom; Grandfather helps with homework, takes Tenzing to the bus stop, reports power failures and collected money from the neighbourhood to repair a storm-damaged house. His parents discuss special expenses together, and his mother says to save for unexpected needs.

Who shops, cooks, cleans and helps with homework in your home? Which people outside your family — vendors, drivers, sanitation workers, teachers — support you every day? Recognising this interdependence builds respect and responsibility.
