Unit 4: Travel and Adventure — The Tunnel, Travel, Conquering the Summit
Unit Overview
Unit 4: Travel and Adventure celebrates the thrill of journeys — a boy who waits in a jungle to watch a steam engine, a poet who longs to board any train, and a mountaineer who climbs Everest on a prosthetic leg. Together they show that adventure needs curiosity, courage and determination.
1. The Tunnel — Ruskin Bond (story)
Part I. At noon in a still jungle, Suraj cycles out of town, leaves his bicycle in a village and waits near a railway cutting to watch the midday steam engine roar out of a tunnel:
…the steam engine shot out of the tunnel, snorting and puffing like some green, black, and gold dragon, some beautiful monster out of Suraj's dreams.
He walks through the dark, damp tunnel just to know what it is like inside (a bat flies past, a lizard scuttles). Outside, he glimpses "a flash of orange and gold" — a leopard. He meets the watchman Sunder Singh, who lives in a hut about fifteen metres from the tunnel. Sunder Singh jokes that the tunnel is "truly my tunnel… I have only lent it to the Government", and calls the leopard "my leopard". His duty: walk the tunnel before each train; if something is wrong, wave a red flag by day or his lamp by night to warn the driver. He invites Suraj to watch the night mail (about nine o'clock), saying "It is safer in the jungle than in the town" — he was nearly run over by a bus in town.
Part II. The next evening, over tea, they hear a rhythmic sawing sound — the leopard is in the tunnel. If it stays, the night mail will kill it. Sunder Singh takes his axe (just in case) and Suraj goes with him; at first Suraj cannot shout because his throat is dry. They find the leopard crouching between the tracks, shout together, and it disappears. They check the tunnel; the rails begin to hum and the train thunders past.
About a week later Suraj travels on the same night mail with his father, who is going to Delhi on a business trip. Near the tunnel he sees the lamp and knows his friend is there — a "firefly" lighting up the darkness "for steam engines and leopards".
Themes: friendship between a boy and an old man, respect for wildlife, duty, and the magic of trains.
2. Travel — Edna St. Vincent Millay (poem)
Three stanzas, rhyme scheme ABAB. By day the railroad is "miles away" and the day "is loud with voices speaking", yet the poet hears every train's whistle shrieking (personification). At night she sees its "cinders red on the sky" and hears its "engine steaming". She loves her friends — "better friends I'll not be knowing" — yet:
Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, / No matter where it's going.
The repeated line "there isn't a train goes by" shows her fascination with trains, which symbolise adventure and opportunities. Her tone is thoughtful and longing, and the poem is rich in imagery ("day is loud", "cinders red", "engine steaming").
3. Conquering the Summit (biography of Arunima Sinha)
"Failure is not when we fall short of achieving our goals. It is when we don't have goals worthy enough."

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Understand 'The Tunnel' — Suraj's curiosity, Sunder Singh's duty and the rescue of the leopard — and why Sunder Singh is called a 'firefly'.
- ✓Appreciate Millay's 'Travel': its ABAB rhyme scheme, personification, imagery and the poet's longing for adventure.
- ✓Retell Arunima Sinha's journey from a 2011 train accident to Everest (21 May 2013) and Mount Vinson (2019), and explain why she is a beacon of resilience.
- ✓Use 'would' and 'used to' for past habits, colons and semicolons, sound words, and articles correctly.
- ✓Write a descriptive paragraph, a diamante poem and a formal letter, and give directions using a map.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Play a steam-engine sound clip before reading 'The Tunnel' and ask students to list words that describe it; compare with Bond's 'green, black, and gold dragon'.
- →Draw a flow chart of Sunder Singh's day and night inspection routine (red flag by day, lamp by night) on the board with students.
- →Discuss the ethics of the leopard scene: why did Sunder Singh want to save it, and why take an axe at all?
- →Read 'Travel' aloud twice — once for sounds (whistle, steaming), once for feelings — and let students mark the ABAB rhymes.
- →Trace Arunima Sinha's Seven Summits on a world map and build a timeline: 2011 accident, 2013 Everest, 2015 Padma Shri, 2019 Vinson.
- →Turn Arunima's quotes into class posters and ask students to write their own 'worthy goal'.
- →Practise 'would' and 'used to' with a 'When I was little…' speaking chain.
- →Give a jumbled paragraph without colons and semicolons and let groups punctuate it before comparing answers.
📋 Assessment Questions
- How did the watchman warn engine drivers of danger by day and by night?
- Why did Suraj not shout at first in the tunnel, and how was the leopard driven away?
- Identify the rhyme scheme of 'Travel' and one example each of personification and imagery.
- What did Arunima Sinha do to prepare for Everest, and who guided her?
- Correct the error: 'Mount K2 is a second highest peak in the world.'
