Chapter 8: Inspiration and Imagination (Music)
Introduction
We may assume that musicians are simply born with talent and are lucky to be on stage. This chapter shows that many musicians overcame disability or difficult circumstances to succeed. It also connects music with monuments, science and your own future.
Key Ideas
1. Artists who overcame challenges (Activity 8.1)
- He composed music for more than 200 films and for the popular TV series Ramayan.
- He won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985).
- He also performed in hundreds of live and TV shows.
2. Musical monuments
Many temples and historical buildings have deep connections with music, and several temple sculptures show musical instruments being played. Examples:
You research how each is connected to music, write a page on each, and find out if concerts or festivals happen there today.
3. Musical pillars — music, science and sculpture together
Indian temples have a tradition of musical pillars that produce notes when struck, because of the stone material and precise carving.
How do they work? The pillars are made of resonant stone that vibrates at clearly audible frequencies. They are often hollow and have varying densities, allowing different frequencies to be produced.
4. Exploring music institutions (Activity 8.2)
Find a local music school or venue: What does it do? Does it run classes or concerts? Visit if you can, and discuss joining a music class. The book shows a photo of girls attending a music school in Mysore (1895) and asks whether you have heard of the Shillong Chamber Choir and the Bastar Band (Chhattisgarh) or other indigenous bands.
5. Imagining my future
