Project 3: Working with Wood and Bamboo (Part 2: Work with Machines and Materials)
About the Project
Wood and bamboo are all around us — doors, carts, school benches, cricket bats, baskets, toys, kitchen handles and fishermen's boats. In this project you work with wood and bamboo to make useful objects, learning to use basic carpentry tools, make a prototype and build a finished product.
India is famous for wooden architecture: Hidimba Temple (Manali), Rumtek Monastery (Sikkim), Vishrambaagh Wada (Pune) and the Padmanabhapuram Palace in Tamil Nadu — one of Asia's largest wooden palaces, built 400 years ago and spread over 6.5 acres.
Wood is a renewable resource because trees can be replanted, but it is not sustainable if we cut more than we plant. In places like the high Himalayas, trees do not grow back easily. Ideally, wood should be used after a tree completes its lifecycle. The Atharva Veda says: "Whatever we dig out from you, O Earth! May that have quick regeneration."
Substitutes include engineered wood — plywood and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), made from recycled wood, sawdust and wood fibre — and bamboo, a perennial grass that grows back when cut. Bamboo grows in almost all of India (most in the north-east), except the very hot and cold deserts of Rajasthan and Ladakh.

What You Need to Know First
Step-by-Step Activities
Activity 1: Visit a woodworking or bamboo workshop
Ask the carpenter what work is done, which woods are used and why, which tools and machines are used, the basic techniques (measuring, drawing the design, cutting, joining) and safety precautions.
Activity 2: Understanding wooden products — joints and fasteners
Nails, screws, nuts and bolts are fasteners. Nails are fixed with a hammer, screws with a screwdriver, and bolts go through drilled holes. Hinges join moving parts such as doors and lids.
Activity 3: Making a prototype
A prototype is the first model of a product to check the design. Make it from cardboard or waste softwood:
Advantages: you see whether the design works in 3D, reduce errors in the real object and can change the design cheaply.
Activity 4: Making a product from wood
Start simple — a wooden coaster, wall hanging, key holder, chalk duster, phone stand, nameplate or toy. Basic skills:
Activity 5: Making a bamboo product
The bamboo culm is the hollow, cylindrical stem divided by solid nodes; the parts between nodes are internodes. The stem is covered by a sheath. Steps: sketch → measure and mark → cut internodes with a hacksaw (using the bench vice) → scrape off the outer skin and smooth → assemble → sand → varnish or paint.
Activity 6: Costing
List materials (wood/bamboo, nails, paint/varnish, sandpaper), quantity and cost, add your labour time, and compare with the market price to decide a selling price.
Activity 7: Basic repairs around school
Tighten loose screws on benches, nail loose parts, sand worn edges and repaint — maintenance extends the life of wooden objects.

Extend Your Learning
Make simple wooden instruments for a mini orchestra — an ektara, bamboo flute, damaru, wooden shaker or clapper — and reuse old wood (e.g., turn a broken drawer into a shelf).
Common Mistakes
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Wood is renewable but must be used sustainably; engineered wood and bamboo are substitutes.
- ✓Hardwood vs softwood can be identified with the fingernail test; beginners use softwood or bamboo.
- ✓Common joints are butt, mitre (45°), lap and mortise-and-tenon; fasteners and hinges also join parts.
- ✓A cardboard prototype tests the design before making the real product.
- ✓Basic skills: measure, mark, plane, drill, cut, sand, assemble and varnish.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Bring samples of different woods and let students do the fingernail test.
- →Show the four joints using cardboard or scrap-wood models.
- →Insist on a sketch and cardboard prototype before any wood is cut.
- →Invite a local carpenter to demonstrate safe use of the saw, plane and drill.
- →Have groups make coasters, then calculate costs and compare with market prices.
- →Organise a 'repair day' to fix loose screws and edges on school benches.
- →Extend with a mini orchestra of handmade ektara, shakers and clappers.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Identify the joint used in a given object and explain why it suits the purpose.
- List the steps to make a wooden coaster from sketch to varnish.
- Explain two advantages of making a prototype.
- Name the parts of a bamboo culm used in products.
- State four safety rules in the workshop.
