Project 6: Creating Advertisements (Part 3: Work in Human Services)
About the Project
Advertisements persuade people to take specific actions — to buy a product or service, or to support a social cause. In this project you study how advertisements work and then design and make an advertisement for a real small business in your locality, such as a bakery, tailor, diya seller or bamboo craftsperson.
The project links to what you learnt in Grade 7 Social Science ('Understanding Markets'): sellers must reach buyers, and advertising completes that part of the chain. But advertising also carries social messages, such as the Swachh Bharat Mission or the polio vaccination drive.
Advertising can be of two broad kinds — commercial (selling products/services) and social (communicating messages for society).

Step-by-Step Activities
Activity 1: Types of advertisements
Follow a day in Ruchi's life (she lives with her grandparents, parents and younger sibling and visits her friend Priti) and spot all the advertisements she meets. Sort them into:
Activity 2: Elements of an advertisement
Activity 3: Meet an expert
Invite a shopkeeper, a signboard designer, a management teacher or someone who works in advertising. Ask what makes an advertisement memorable, why so much is spent on advertising, how the medium is chosen, and what problems advertisements can cause.
Activity 4: Identify a client
List small businesses near (or inside) the school. Prepare a questionnaire, visit with a teacher or known adult, ask for 20–30 minutes, introduce your group, and explain your purpose. If the owner agrees, sign a simple contract: photos only with approval, agreed dates and times, regular progress updates, and interactions only in the presence of a teacher or parent.
Activity 5: Understand the business
Interview the owner about the products or services, how long they have worked, what makes them unique (price, materials, durability, delivery, cleanliness, after-sales service), the best-selling item and the price range. Build a customer (target audience) profile: age, location, occupation, and feedback. Then choose a form: posters, a video or reel, or labels, pamphlets and banners, depending on cost and resources.
Activity 6: Design the advertisement
Record your decisions for logo, tagline, call to action, visuals, jingle, emotional connect and target audience. Whatever the medium, the key message, logo, tagline and call to action stay the same.
Activity 7: Review
Check for creativity, clarity of message (clear tagline and call to action, clear benefits) and visual appeal. Then share it with the business owner and record whether they would use it and why.

👨🏫 Teaching Tips

- →Bring in newspaper cut-outs and let groups label logo, tagline, visuals, emotional connect and call to action.
- →Play two short radio or TV advertisements and time them; discuss why they are short and what the jingle does.
- →Role-play the interview with a small business owner before the real visit.
- →Have groups draft and sign the sample contract so they practise professional agreements.
- →Let groups make both a handmade and a digital poster and compare the process.
- →Run a gallery walk for peer review using the creativity, clarity and visual-appeal criteria.
- →Discuss an example of misleading advertising to highlight ethics and audience rights.
