Chapter 1: Understanding Social Science
The Big Questions
Introduction
In Grades 6 to 8 you explored Social Science through stories of people, places and events. Grade 9 begins by stepping back to ask what the subject truly is.
Social Science is the systematic study of human society. It tells us not only what happened or where things are, but also why events occur, how people live together, how environments influence life, how governments function, how economies operate, and how the past and present together shape the world.
While Physics, Chemistry and Biology study the natural world, Social Science focuses on society, institutions, cultures and human interactions.
Key Concepts
Social Science in Everyday Life
Think of one ordinary day: your house is built from materials sourced from many places; your food is harvested, processed, transported, bought and sold by many people; you travel on roads planned by public authorities; your school is shaped by educational policies; your electricity comes from distant power stations through a vast network. Even the simplest activity depends on governance, economic production, social cooperation and the natural environment.
The chapter asks questions such as:
Society does not function by chance — it is shaped by history, geography, institutions, resources and human choices. Social Science answers such questions through careful observation, evidence and logical reasoning.
Understanding Society through Time and Traditions
Society has changed greatly over thousands of years — from communities depending directly on nature, to growing crops, domesticating animals, building settlements, exchanging goods and organising governance. Villages grew into towns, towns into cities.
India's knowledge traditions valued discussion, questioning and logical reasoning:
Modern social scientists continue this legacy: they observe lives, conduct interviews and surveys, examine documents and compare times and places, building explanations supported by evidence.
Social Science as a Study of Disciplines
No single field can explain society. A drought, for example, affects crops (environment), farmers' incomes (economy), relief measures (politics), migration to cities (society) and traditional ways of coping (culture). In Grades 9–10, Social Science draws mainly on four core disciplines:
Other disciplines — Sociology, Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology — also belong to the Social Science family and will be studied in higher grades.
Why Study Social Science?
The Future of Social Science
New technologies, expanding cities, environmental concerns, migration and global connections make Social Science more important. It will help address climate change, sustainable development, social harmony and equitable use of resources.

Connect to Today
Look at any news headline — a flood, a new law, rising prices — and you will find geography, history, politics and economics all tangled together. That is exactly why Social Science studies society as one connected story.

- ✓Indian traditions like the Pañchamahābhūtas, vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam and the Arthaśhāstra show a long history of systematic social thinking.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Start with the 'one day in your life' walk-through and let students list every system they depend on before breakfast.
- →Run the Let's Analyse activity: groups report one local change from the last five years using the four guiding questions.
- →Use the drought example as a board diagram with five branches (environment, economy, politics, society, culture).
- →Bring pictures of a coin, an inscription and a manuscript and have students classify each source type.
- →Demonstrate the NCERT School Bhuvan portal so students can locate their own school or village.
- →Hold a short discussion on how the Arthaśhāstra and Panchayati Raj connect ancient and modern ideas of governance.
- →End with each student writing one 'why' question about their locality that Social Science could answer.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the student define Social Science and contrast it with the natural sciences?
- Can the student name the four core disciplines and state what each studies?
- Can the student classify historical sources as literary, archaeological, epigraphic or numismatic?
