Lesson 13
Project: Image Classification
Build the plan for a system that labels what's in a picture
1Problem Statement✨
In our digital world, we have countless images shared every day. But finding specific images or understanding their content can be challenging. This project helps create a system that labels images automatically, making it easier to organize and search for pictures.
2Objective🎯
In this project, students will learn how to design a basic image classification system. They will understand how AI can recognize objects in pictures and how to conceptualize the workflow of this technology.
3Required Components/Software💡
4- A computer with Python installed🚀
- A webcam or pre-existing image dataset
- OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library)
- TensorFlow or Keras for building the model
5Architecture🔍
The system consists of a webcam (or image dataset) that captures images. The image is then processed using OpenCV to prepare it for classification. Finally, TensorFlow or Keras uses a pre-trained model to analyze the image and predict the label, which is displayed on the screen.
6Step-by-Step Instructions⭐
1. Research and select a pre-trained model suitable for image classification (e.g., MobileNet).
2. Install OpenCV and TensorFlow libraries on your computer.
3. Write a Python script to capture an image using the webcam or load an image from your dataset.
4. Pre-process the image (resize, normalize) so it fits the model requirements.
5. Use the model to classify the image and print out the predicted label.
6. Test your system with different images to see how well it performs!
7Expected Output🧩
Success looks like your system accurately labeling images when you run your Python script. You should see the predicted label printed out for each image, such as "cat," "dog," or "car."
8Challenge / Extension🎈
To make this project more challenging, try creating your own dataset and training a simple model from scratch. This will help you understand how models learn and improve over time.
