Lesson 14
Project: Object Detection
Design a system that finds and boxes objects in an image or video
1Problem Statement✨
Object detection helps solve real-world problems such as identifying and tracking objects in security footage, assisting visually impaired individuals, or organizing items in a warehouse. By creating a system that can recognize and box objects in images or videos, we can automate tasks and improve efficiency in various fields.
2Objective🎯
In this project, students will learn the basics of computer vision and object detection. They will conceptualize a system that identifies objects in an image or video and draws bounding boxes around them, providing an introduction to artificial intelligence and robotics.
3Required Components/Software💡
4- Webcam or smartphone camera🚀
- Computer with Python installed
- OpenCV library (an open-source computer vision library)
- NumPy library (for numerical operations)5Architecture🔍
The system will consist of a camera capturing real-time video. This video feed is processed by a computer running Python code that utilizes the OpenCV library to detect objects. Detected objects will be boxed in the video feed and displayed back to the user.
6Step-by-Step Instructions⭐
1. Set up your camera to capture video. Connect it to your computer and ensure it is recognized by your operating system.
72. Install OpenCV and NumPy using pip:🧩
```
pip install opencv-python numpy
```3. Write a Python script that captures video from the camera:
```python
import cv2
cap = cv2.VideoCapture(0)
while True:
ret, frame = cap.read()
cv2.imshow('Video', frame)
if cv2.waitKey(1) & 0xFF == ord('q'):
break
cap.release()
cv2.destroyAllWindows()
```4. Integrate object detection using OpenCV's pre-trained models (like YOLO or Haar Cascades) to identify objects and draw bounding boxes around them.
5. Test the system by running your script and moving objects in front of the camera.
8Expected Output🎈
Success will look like a real-time video feed where the system detects and boxes objects, clearly highlighting them as they move within the frame.
9Challenge / Extension✨
To make the project more challenging, students can modify the system to classify the detected objects (e.g., distinguishing between a cat and a dog) or add functionality to save the detected frames as images.
