Lesson 13
Linked Lists
Build your first dynamic data structure
1What is a Linked List?✨
A linked list is a dynamic data structure that allows you to store a collection of items. Unlike arrays, linked lists can grow and shrink in size, making them very flexible for managing data!
2Why Learn Linked Lists?🎯
- ✓ Efficient memory usage
- ✓ Dynamic resizing capabilities
- ✓ Easier to insert and delete elements
- ✓ Fundamental for many advanced data structures (like stacks and queues)
3Creating a Linked List💡
To start, you need to define a node structure that contains data and a pointer to the next node. Here's how to create a basic node:
typedef struct Node {
int data;
struct Node* next;
} Node;This structure helps you connect nodes together!
4Adding Elements to a Linked List🚀
You can add new nodes to your linked list easily. For example, here's a function that inserts a new node at the beginning:
void insertAtBeginning(Node** head, int newData) {
Node* newNode = (Node*)malloc(sizeof(Node));
newNode->data = newData;
newNode->next = (*head);
(*head) = newNode;
}This function creates a new node and makes it the head of the list!
5Traversing a Linked List🔍
To see all elements in your linked list, you can traverse it using a loop. Check out this example:
void printList(Node* node) {
while (node != NULL) {
printf("%d -> ", node->data);
node = node->next;
}
printf("NULL\n");
}This function prints each node's data until it reaches the end!
6Your Linked List Project⭐
- This grade, you will build a simple contact manager using linked lists.
- ✓ Add contacts dynamically
- ✓ Remove contacts
- ✓ Display all contacts
- ✓ Search for a contact by name
