Lesson 16
Searching Algorithms
Linear and binary search
1What is Searching?✨
Searching is the process of finding a specific item in a collection of data. In programming, efficient searching is crucial for performance, especially with large datasets.
2Why Learn Searching Algorithms?🎯
- ✓ Understand how to find data efficiently
- ✓ Essential for coding interviews and real-world applications
- ✓ Forms the foundation for more complex algorithms
- ✓ Enhances your problem-solving skills
3Linear Search💡
Linear search is the simplest searching algorithm. It checks each element in a list until it finds the target or reaches the end.
4Example of Linear Search in C:🚀
#include <stdio.h>int linearSearch(int arr[], int size, int target) {
for (int i = 0; i < size; i++) {
if (arr[i] == target) return i;
}
return -1; // Not found
}5Binary Search🔍
Binary search is much faster than linear search but requires the array to be sorted. It works by repeatedly dividing the search interval in half.
6Example of Binary Search in C:⭐
#include <stdio.h>int binarySearch(int arr[], int size, int target) {
int left = 0, right = size - 1;
while (left <= right) {
int mid = left + (right - left) / 2;
if (arr[mid] == target) return mid;
if (arr[mid] < target) left = mid + 1;
else right = mid - 1;
}
return -1; // Not found
}7When to Use Each Algorithm🧩
- Use linear search for small or unsorted datasets.
- Use binary search for large, sorted datasets to save time.
- Analyze the trade-offs of each method based on data characteristics.
8What You'll Build This Grade🎈
- ✓ Implement searching algorithms in projects
- ✓ Compare performance of linear and binary search
- ✓ Create a user interface to allow users to search data
- ✓ Combine searching with other data structures for advanced applications
