Lesson 2
Pointers
Memory management essentials
1What are Pointers?✨
Pointers are special variables in C that store the memory address of another variable. They allow you to directly access and manipulate memory, giving you more control over your program.
2Why Learn Pointers?🎯
- ✓ Essential for memory management
- ✓ Enables dynamic memory allocation
- ✓ Useful for working with arrays and strings
- ✓ Helps in creating complex data structures
3Your First Pointer💡
Here’s how to declare and use a pointer in C:
int num = 10;
int *ptr = # // ptr holds the address of numThis code creates a pointer `ptr` that points to the memory address of `num`.
4Pointer Basics🚀
- A pointer is declared using an asterisk (*) before the variable name
- The ampersand (&) operator is used to get the address of a variable
- You can access the value at the address using the dereference operator (*)5Example:🔍
printf("%d", *ptr); // Displays the value of num, which is 106Using Pointers with Arrays⭐
Pointers are particularly useful with arrays. You can use a pointer to iterate through array elements:
int arr[] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5};
int *p = arr; // p points to the first element of arrfor(int i = 0; i < 5; i++) {
printf("%d ", *(p + i)); // Accessing array elements using pointer arithmetic
}7Memory Management🧩
Pointers help you manage memory effectively. You can allocate and free memory dynamically using functions like malloc() and free():int *array = (int*)malloc(5 * sizeof(int)); // Allocate memory for 5 integers
free(array); // Free the allocated memory8What You'll Build This Grade🎈
