Lesson 10
Views
Save reusable virtual tables
1What is a View?✨
A view in SQL is a virtual table that is based on the result of a query. It doesn't store the data itself but provides a way to present data from one or more tables in a specific format.
2Why Use Views?🎯
- ✓ Simplify complex queries
- ✓ Enhance security by restricting access to specific data
- ✓ Reuse commonly used queries
- ✓ Improve readability and manageability of SQL code
3Creating a View💡
To create a view, you use the CREATE VIEW statement followed by the view name and the query that defines it. Here's an example:
4CREATE VIEW employee_details AS🚀
- SELECT name, position, salary
- FROM employees
- WHERE active = true;
This creates a view called employee_details that only shows active employees.
5Querying a View🔍
You can query a view just like a regular table. This allows you to easily access the data defined in the view. For example:
6SELECT * FROM employee_details;⭐
This retrieves all records from the employee_details view.
7Updating a View🧩
If the underlying data changes, the view will reflect these changes automatically. However, you can also update the view's definition. To do this, use the CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW statement:
8CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW employee_details AS🎈
- SELECT name, position, salary
- FROM employees
- WHERE active = true AND salary > 50000;
This updates the employee_details view to include only those active employees with a salary greater than 50,000.
9Benefits of Using Views✨
- ✓ Reduces redundancy by encapsulating complex queries
- ✓ Makes your SQL queries cleaner and easier to read
- ✓ Allows for easier maintenance of your SQL code
