Chapter 4: Our School — A Happy Place

Introduction

Aasha and Mohit are walking to school. Mohit says, "I love school! It is where I see my friends, play games and learn new things every day. It is my happy place." Aasha wants to make their school a green school, a school that manages waste, saves water, uses electricity carefully and plants and cares for trees. Their teacher Anupam asks how they will begin, and the class decides to take a close look at their school.

What We Learn

Be a School Explorer!

Students first map their school (building, playground, garden, water tanks, gate, pathways). Then they form School Explorer Teams:

  • Water Watchers: leaking taps, wasted water, covered and clean tanks, wet spots where mosquitoes breed.
  • Electricity Savers: lights and fans left on, use of natural light, hottest and coolest places.
  • Green Guardians: trees, who cares for them, where to plant more, birds and butterflies, compost pit.
  • Waste Warriors: where litter is found, enough dustbins, separate bins for food waste.
  • Traffic Trackers: the school gate at arrival and exit, pedestrian crossings, speeding vehicles.
  • Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya focuses on clean toilets, safe drinking water, waste management and hygiene. Every child has the right to a clean, safe school.

    Waste management

Reduce waste by using only what we need and reusing things. Separate waste into dry and wet (green bin for wet, blue bin for dry). Old newspapers go to traditional recyclers, and sanitation workers deserve our respect (dignity of labour).

    Let us be cool!

Shady trees and windows that let in a breeze keep rooms cool. A white roof reflects the Sun's heat, while a black surface absorbs heat. Clay matkas cool water without electricity.

    Dripping water

Even a small leak wastes a lot of water over time. The Jal Shakti Abhiyan encourages planting trees, catching rainwater and using water wisely. In Ladakh, students build ice stupas that melt in summer to water school gardens.

    Greenery around us

Trees give shade, keep air clean, keep surroundings cool and give food and homes to birds and insects. You can create a butterfly garden. In Assam, one man planted a whole forest that is now home to elephants and deer. Mawlynnong (Meghalaya) is known as Asia's cleanest village.

    Traffic safety and fire safety

  • Many accidents happen because people do not follow traffic rules. Students design signboards for the school gate.
  • Fire drill: Move calmly to the nearest exit (do not run or panic), crawl low under smoke with your mouth covered, do not hide in closets or bathrooms, help others only if safe, go to the assembly point, tell a teacher if anyone is missing, and never go back inside.
  • What we do matters!

Respect and kindness are shown by waiting for your turn, using kind words, helping others and keeping places clean. The class discusses situations like pushing in the water line, scribbling on benches, littering and teasing.

    Activities in the Chapter

  • School map and explorer team survey.
  • Segregation game: Put 30–40 chits into three boxes: green (wet), blue (dry) and "items for recycler".
  • Black and white tiles in the Sun: The white tile stays cooler.
  • Dripping tap: Time how long it takes to fill one glass, then work out how many glasses are lost in a day.
  • Thermometer activity: Water in a glass under a tree stays cooler than water in the Sun.
  • Situations discussion and a happiness tree made of leaves with kind actions.
  • Key Words

  • Green school (हरित विद्यालय), Waste segregation (कचरा पृथक्करण)
  • Dry waste (सूखा कचरा), Wet waste (गीला कचरा)
  • Recycler (कबाड़ी / पुनर्चक्रणकर्ता), Compost (खाद)
  • Sanitation worker (सफाई कर्मचारी), Conservation (संरक्षण)
  • Assembly point (एकत्रण स्थल), Fire extinguisher (अग्निशामक)
  • Pedestrian crossing (पैदल पार पथ), Kindness (दयालुता)
  • Connect to Your Life

Where is the fire extinguisher in your school? Which tap drips? What one kind thing did you see today?

    Common Mix-ups

  • Black surfaces get hotter, and white surfaces stay cooler.
  • In a fire, crawl low because the cleaner air is near the floor. Do not hide.
  • Old newspapers should go to recyclers, not in the bin.
  • A small drip is not a small waste. It adds up to many glasses a day.
  • Let Us Reflect (Hints)

Write a letter on "My School — My Happy Place", a diary entry from a wheelchair user's or a sanitation worker's point of view, and a one-minute "My Dream School" speech.

    💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓A green school manages waste, saves water and electricity, and grows and cares for trees
    • ✓Waste should be reduced, reused and separated into dry and wet waste, with recyclables given to recyclers
    • ✓Trees, white roofs and ventilation keep places cool, and small leaks waste a lot of water over time
    • ✓Traffic rules and fire-drill steps (exit calmly, crawl under smoke, go to the assembly point) keep us safe
    • ✓Kindness, respect and taking turns make school a happy place for everyone, including sanitation workers and students with disabilities

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Form the five School Explorer Teams and give each a checklist from the chapter to survey the campus
    • →Run the segregation game with green, blue and recycler boxes, and correct placements together
    • →Paint two tiles black and white and let students touch them after 30 minutes in the sun
    • →Time a dripping bottle filling a glass, then use multiplication to estimate the water wasted in a day
    • →Invite a recycler or sanitation worker to speak, and discuss dignity of labour
    • →Conduct a real fire drill with the school staff and practise the assembly point
    • →Build a 'happiness tree' wall where each student adds a leaf with one kind action

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the student describe what makes a school a 'green school'?
    2. Can the student sort common items into dry waste, wet waste and items for recyclers?
    3. Can the student explain why a white roof keeps a building cooler than a black one?
    4. Can the student list the correct steps to follow during a fire drill?
    5. Can the student suggest a kind response to a situation such as someone pushing in the water line?
